East Carolina University, Greenville, NC: March 4th 2010
I began preaching at 12: 45 with one student waiting in the free speech area for me to arrive. It was windy but sunny, and a crowd began to build within 15- 20 minutes. The crowd of 25+ was at least 50 feet away, and one young lady was very vocal in opposing me and my message. The entire crowd approached closer to a more desirable distance, and neared 100 at times. I preached repentance (Acts 2:38, 3:19, 20:21) and against any form of sin that came to mind.
The majority of the crowd, especially many professing Christians (sinners) demonstrated their biblical ignorance by opposing the message of holiness, (1Peter 1:14-16; Hebrews 12:14) and became verbally abusive. Two police officers were on hand and one officer instructed the crowd to back away from me. He also reproved a loud male heckler for cursing and being in my personal face. A junior female student who professed to be a sinner initially just heckled and mocked, but she ended up listening for several hours and listened quietly later on in the afternoon.
The crowd fluctuated much after 2pm 50 - 100, and I preached over many hecklers, false teachers and loud obnoxious religious hypocrites (Luke 6:46, Matt 7:21). There were not many good or sincere questions being asked and I felt the need to preach the fundamentals of the faith such as eternal judgment, repentance from dead works, and faith in Christ. I preached until 3pm then moved to the side and had small group discussions. Many seemed as we discussed a wide range of subjects. I also exhorted the Christians on hand to live a more crucified life for the Gospels sake. I probably could have stayed and talked to students for several more hours.
I'm baffled at how often I have taught and preached to the same students on several occasions that Christians are not sinners, and that Christians are called to live holy, obediant lives, seperated from the world. Yet those same professing Christians show their lack of Bible reading and their rejection of the truth by opposing this message.
I joined a few students at a tea shop where we talked for an hour or so about biblical topics, and I exhorted them to begin preaching on campus. They were supportive of the preaching and one young man which was not a student was very encouraging as he rebuked sinners during the preach, and seemed to agree with most of my message. The Lord really seems to be answering prayers as I am gaining more respect and favor with a multitude on this campus, and many seemed to be understanding the doctrine of holiness, but due to the false teachers and the lukewarm, man pleasing, contemporary, worldly, “Christian”/groups on campus the gospel still receives strong opposition and many still view the call to holiness as heresy. Overall it was one of my better days with the Lord on this campus.
