For those of you in NC or in driving distance of NC, the Lexington BBQ Festival is this coming weekend. The event draws over 500k people and is a great outreach opportunity. If you are traveling some distance and spend the night Saturday, we would love to have you join us for Sunday morning services at my local church where I will be speaking. www.barbecuefestival.com/Grace and Peace, Joe

Joe, which days will you be going and when will you get there? I might come on Saturday...
Also, would you say that this is something good to bring the wife and kids to?

Rev,
I will be going Saturday, probably getting there around 11am or so. It is a family friendly event, and your wife and kids may enjoy it. My wife and kids may come out, I'm not sure yet. My kids love passing out tracts with me, but the crowd makes it hard to keep an eye on them. The people at this festival are usually friendly and receptive. The police lined up behind me at one point when the crowd had grown the largest, yet they never gave us any static. Let me know if you will be able to make it! Our church is having a conference in the mountains this weekend and my usual group won't be able to come out with me.

Joe. Do you all just hand out tracts and do 1 to 1's or do you open air preach also.... The reason I ask is they have a big BBQ event here in Feb. and was just trying to get some witnessing ideas.
Thanks, Jim

Thanks, Jim Jim, We do both, depending on the crowd. Sometimes, the crowd is fast moving and not suited for open air. In this case we pass out tracts and talk to those who stop. A great place to open air is near the food vendors. People sit down to eat and stay put long enough to hear a gospel presentation. This is a family friendly event and I try to keep that in mind when I preach. A confrontational approach used on college campuses or in a crowd of revelers would not be appropriate. If you do happen to get a heckler, try to respond politely but bluntly. Grace and Peace, Joe

Hey Joe...I'm pretty sure that I will be there on Saturday. Will let you know for sure soon... Awesome! I am keeping an eye on the weather, part of me hoping for lots of rain (due to the drought), and the other part hoping for a brake in the rain Saturday. Grace and Peace, Joe

I have a work crisis and am about to fly to Florida. I should be back by Saturday, but let me know for sure whether or not you are going to be able to make it and I will let you know for sure whether or not I will be back in time.

Hey brother, I'm going if you're going. Otherwise I'm not going. Let me know if you can make it back on time. If you can't, I will just take the day as a family day...

Thought I would post an update to let everyone know how it went.
I was worn out from traveling back from FL the night before, but still looking forward to the outreach. Jerrod (who is only 14yrs old) and I arrived about 10:30am or so. We joined a group of guys from Mnt Airy, NC and began to take turns preaching. The group is very, well, Pentecostal I guess you could say in their preaching. After about an hour the police said we needed to keep moving and that we couldn't stand in one place on the sidewalk for extended periods of time. It was the same officer I dealt with last year and really didn't push the issue when I told him we didn't plan on moving. Jerrod and I stayed while the other group left. Kerrigan arrived about this time and joined us. We passed out tracts for awhile and talked with folks one-2-one. We grabbed a bite to eat and headed back out to preach. Kerrigan did a wonderful job preaching the gospel to the massive crowd traveling back and forth on the street. Jerrod had my sandwich board, and passed out tracts to those who asked for them while Kerrigan preached. It was a blessing to hear Rev speak and Jerrod and I were both moved by his passion and eloquent presentation. I spoke after Kerrigan and had one heckler. I tried to be as pleasant as possible as it was a family event. We then moved down to another spot and Rev preached again. Several people stopped and talked to us while he was preaching, and we had some great one-2-ones. My voice was starting to fade and I had to preach the Sunday morning service at my church and decided not to preach again. It was a great time and I enjoyed the fellowship with both Jerrod and Kerrigan, but most of all I enjoyed the fellowship we all had with God.
Sunday morning, I had Jerrod join me in front of the congregation. We talked about the recent outreaches and the different things that we have learned. I spoke on Hebrews 2 and "neglecting our salvation". It was a great weekend and I thank Kerrigan for joining us. It was good for Jerrod to finally hear a good OA preacher! ;D

Jim,
Shoot me an email if you have any specific questions. My email address is below.
Honestly, this wasn't the best organized outreach we have done. We just loaded up on tracts, grabbed my sandwich board and our Bibles and hit the festival. I used to spend a great deal of time planning outreaches, but lately I have just been letting people know we will be in their area and invite them to come and labor with us. We just let the Lord lead us from there.

Great time of fellowship and sowing the seed of the Gospel. Glory to God! Jim, the amount of planning I do amounts to the same thing that Joe said. I call some people or email them and tell them where I am going to be and when...and if they show up, they show up...if they don't, then I have my Bible in my hand and my tracts in my book bag and go at it! Praise God that one man with God on his side is the majority no matter how many sinners there are!
