When most people think of the Garden of Eden, they think of the bliss of no sin, no death, and no pain. While this was great it was far from the greatest blessing. God came and walked there (Gen. 3:8). God communed with them. The greatest thing about the Garden was that God would come and meet with them. There are also great things about salvation. Neither sin nor death reigns in the believer’s body. We have been granted eternal life. While it is great to know that we have a place prepared for us that there will be no sin, no death, and no pain, the greatest thing is that God can commune with you. Christ did not come that you have to wait for heaven to commune with God, but came that the Garden could be in you.
On the sixth day, God took “the dust of the earth,” breathed into the nostrils of that creation, and it became a “living soul.” It seems that God took of the earthly and breathed in the heavenly. Think about this. God had to breathe out before man could take his first breath. God had to give before you could live. God in his great mercy breathes out that you can have life. And we act as if we don’t need God? Even if you chose to go to Hell, God had enough mercy on you that you could even breathe. Is this what Paul meant when he told the men in Athens, “for in him we live, and move, and have our being (Act 17:28)?” It is a thought to ponder.
One day God seemed pleased to take a virgin girl and breathe into her womb that a man would be born. That man was Jesus. God took a woman of the earth and breathed the heavenly into her that “the world may be saved through Him.” I think it is very interesting if you do a study on the word “cool” in Gen 3:8, that the word means “breath,” and being it was God walking there, it might be possible to say it was the breath of God. This is exactly what Christ came to do. He came that the breath of God may be in you, that his creative power may completely fill you, and that it may flow from you.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
That is what eternal life is. It is knowing God. To know God is to walk in obedience and love towards Him and in doing that you will “partake of the heavenly.” The very essence of knowing God is walking in that breath or creative power of God. You will notice that just as Adam and Eve were in sin, they could not stand in the presence of God. They felt completely naked. What they tried to do was use their own works to cover themselves up. That will never satisfy God, nor would one be able to stand in His presence in that Day of Judgment. Christ came to do in you just what God did in this situation, and that is to cover up and correct. Christ came to cover your sins and to correct your wayward life. If you will humbly submit yourself to Christ He will allow you to go where Adam was banished, which is the Garden.
The Garden was a place of rest, but there was still work to do. Adam had to “dress and keep” the Garden. It is our duty to inspect ourselves to make sure we are full clothed in His righteousness and spotless at His Coming. It seems that at a certain time of day God would specially come and commune with them. When is your “cool of the day” when you commune with Him? God was and is willing to share. After God created all of the animals he brought them all to Adam that he could name them. Then, Adam did not find a “help meet for him” so God created woman. It is very dumbfounding to think that the Creator would cater to Adam’s need. An aspect of God that we never think of is humility. God “humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth! (Psa 113:6 )” That is how high and lofty God is. God is willing to come and breathe his breath of life in you, but only if you will come unto him.
James 4:6 …God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
