Friday Night:
3 of us went out. When we first got down to Dickson Street it was somewhat quiet, so I preached and I'm fairly sure that I could be heard down across the street. I didn't preach real long, but I got some attention. It was Robert's first time out. I'm glad to see God is calling more people to come out on the street with us. My pastor got to come out and watch for awhile. He has been wanting to but he works nights so he hasn't been able to until now. I preached in front of a club called "The Stir." I seemed to cause I little bit of a "stir" there. I started preaching and it wasn't long until I had 2 homosexual hecklers. They began humping each other and causing a scene. Then one of them put his head about a foot from my crotch and began staring at it. Of course I was rebuking him while he was doing this with about everything in me, so he didn’t do that for long. Homosexuality is an abomination. Not long after this a few people inside the bar began laughing and heckling so I began to address them. The bouncer then began to yell at me and tell me not to preach to the customers. There were several we had the opportunity to converse with.
Saturday Afternoon:
There was a "Peace Parade" that went on that protested the war on terrorism. To be more precise it was a group of hateful, rebellious, war against the war party. You could just feel the hate for authority and rebellion in the air. I didn’t get to preach OA because they had a PA system and it would have drowned me out. We did have signs and tracts. I handed out a lot of tracts that have Uncle Sam on the front, that people just snatched up because they thought it had something to do with the protest.
Saturday Night:
Jesse, Miles, and Jeff came to town. I was a little worried when we got out in the streets because it looked at though it was going to rain. And of course it did. Still there seemed to be plenty of people out. The guys came prepared and had umbrellas. Jesse preached for awhile in front of "The Stir" and eventually the owner came out and said something about calling the police for preaching to his customers. I don't remember exactly what he said. He probably said that because of me preaching there last night. His bouncer surely told him of what happened. We moved around to several different spots. It would rain really hard for awhile, and then it would stop for awhile, so crowds would come and go. We set up shop in front of one club and preached there for awhile. Jeff preached some about hypocrisy and the owner of the club came out proclaiming to be a Christian. I then preached for awhile. I was pretty stirred up because I didn’t get to preach earlier that afternoon so I felt pretty fervent. The bouncer of the club began to shine his flashlight in my face and tell me to stop. I continued to preach so the bouncer began shutting the large windows that they had open. I remember a couple people looking shocked when I was preaching. One lady comes to mind in particular. The owner told his wife to go across the street and get the police. The came over and asked us to move. They told me that I was being too loud (although I didn’t have any amplification). They said that the warning was for disorderly conduct. They just asked us to be quieter, but other than that they stayed around for most of the night and listened.
We then moved down the street. There was one woman that was dressed very provocative. Jesse began to converse with her and, I believe she flashed him. I don't know for sure, I turned my head. I just remember her beginning to pull her skirt higher and higher. That woman heckled for awhile and left. She went down to a group of people and apparently started making fun of a larger woman. So a fight broke out. They were on the ground for quite a while. Isn't it amazing how the police were right there to tell us to be quieter but then 10 minutes later aren't there to break up the fight?
There was a lot of preaching and witnessing, especially for a rainy night. It was great for me because I had not seen anyone open air preach live (well… other than a few that I've seen quote a few scriptures on the corner, but never had a crowd or anyone converse with them). I learned a lot and I am ready for next weekend to get here to go back down there.
The guys are going to preach at the U of Arkansas Monday and Tuesday. I have to work Monday, but Tuesday I am going to take off and support them. I plan on video taping some if at all possible.
