Didn't have as many people go with us as we would have liked. In fact I was by myself for the first half of the parade.
Arrived right before 12:00. The streets were already crowded with people. Went down to the bar hosting the "festivities", and "cried aloud". The streets were full on both sides. I had no amplification, but the music was not loud, and I think I could be fairly well heard. There must have been at least a thousand people in sight. I don't know how well my voice carried though.
After about 15 minutes, I walked down the street with my Gospel sign and called out scripture verses. I would stop every so often and speak to people huddled in door ways (for it was raining a little) and my voice would reverberate. Praise God that as I walked ahead of the beginning of the parade there were no boom boxes or musicians and I had no competition. Gave at least 3 more 5+ minute addresses, staying ahead of the parade. Several hecklers. But I didn't use them much, because I kept moving.
I gave out few gospel tracts. Probably only 3.
This is the street that I usually preach to about 50 or 100 people (and about 300 cars) during a sermon. And there were thousands!
When the parade was going on it was plain ridiculous. There were train sirens hooked up and played into a mic.... at earsplitting volumes.... on the same street the police said my preaching was "unnecessary noise". It was simply impossible to preach then, even if we had had a bullhorn. So we held up signs.
If hearing is impossible, employ the other sense! Use signs with scriptures! They can't cover up your signs and banners!
When the parade let out, we preached directly against a flat wall of a wide building. The amplication was awesome (natural). A few hecklers would stop now and then. We easily preached to at least 500 people then going to their cars.
But once when I was down there before the parade I set up and a man walked up to me and said something to me:
"Jesus loves you, but everyone on this street thinks your a ****#@%"
Amazingly a man stepped up and said sharply, "I appreciate what he's doing. You better keep your opinion to yourself." Had I not stopped soon thereafter, this stranger may have beat the heckler up for me! I am not exaggerating that much. It was intense.
Probably 10-20000 heard the message or saw a Gospel sign. Would we have had bullhorns, it would have been double. Still it was easily our biggest Jackson event ever. Hallelu Jah. Not one word from the 100 police officers either.
