I was listening to a podcast of the Bible Answer Man last night and the question of polygamy in the O.T. came up. Question: How could David be a man after God's own heart or even be on his way to Heaven when he obviously is living in sin by having more than one wife. It seems to be clear from the beginning where God says in Genesis that the two should become one (not three or four or five), that you should only have one wife. Besides that, God is the same yesterday, today and forever....Thoughts my brothers?!

Great question brother. I have been confronted on this by muslims before. I am glad you asked this because I was going to ask it myself.

In my opinion, it's the same with John Wesley, Finney, etc (or any or us who err on doctrine). They are theologically wrong in many areas but because they have a real deep heart love for God and His glory, God delights in them and blesses them and their labours.
I have said it before and i'll say it again. I believe John Wesley is way off with Arminian views on salvation, however, i'd rather be like that and have the heart he had for God, than have perfect theology and be of no use to God. (Although perfect theology and uselessness to God is probably a contradiction).
Just my opinion.

Armen,
I do not agree. Adulterers go to hell (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Polygamy is adultery. You don't go to hell just for being a Calvinist or Arminian in doctrine.

Ok, so where are the OT 'saints' who had more than one wife? Are they not in heaven?

I am not sure that is why I am asking the question.

Well they're not in hell, so what is the only alternative? It couldn't possibly point to eternal security could it?

Hmmm this may be out of context but could it be...?
Act 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Basically we read into it what we desire to read. However, I personally don't agree with the idea of Polygamy however, the subject is very interesting from a human stand point considering HBO has launched a tv show geard around the subject.

What do you mean by that? You surely can't look into the old testament and show election or eternal security. Not all of Israel (God's chosen people) went to heaven. You don't think all who were involved with Korah's rebellion went to heaven do you? Surely after the earth swallowed them up they didn't go to a place of blessing. What about Saul? ______________ I guess we could start and see when it was clearly commanded that a man should be with one woman, and then see when polygamy first started. There was a very long thread on this topic on Sermon Index, but it got side tracked into marriage/remarriage/ adultery. I don't ever remember there being a clear conclusion. I may look it up and double check that.

Israel were a chosen people in the sense of the 'nation' each and every individual. Are you dispensational? Are you saying that people were saved by different means in the OT?
Everyone who went to heaven in OT times did so for the same reason Abraham did, "believed God and it was accounted unto him as righteousness." Korah, etc. did not do this.

Hmm.... It depends on what you mean by that. Yes, I to believe it is different in areas. We do not have to keep the ordinaces.
A man was/is saved by faith.
Do you believe that God 'chose' during the OT like you believe he does now? Are you dispensational? Do you believe that men were 'born again' in the OT and that the spirit of God abode in them?

Please look at fashion or pattern set by God himself...Gen 2:24 24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. There are many reasons in the Holy Scriptures that things came about:Political alliances.. from the time of the patriachs. The Holy Scripture is not a "who's who, but a "who's when", the Holy Scripture does not gloss over the mistakes of the people, nor does it glorifity their deeds...No, Sir.. God has done this for a reason.. when you read the stories, we can read their stories, and are able to learn from them, even through they are separated from us by thousands years..theirs is a intensely human story, but the main meat or (training of His righteousness) is also a human story touched by the Power of God.. Can we say we have been touched, just as those? God will have His Glory...

I can't go into the 'ins and outs' of dispensational theology, but plainly, I am not dispensational, far from it. It's heresy. It's pollution has been mainly the result of the Scofield bible.
I believe that OT saints were saved by repentance and faith in the sacrifice of Christ, just like NT times.

Hmm, I thought the OT saints were in Abraham's bosom as shared by Jesus... but I never studied it.

Well, that's another discussing bro and to be entirely honest, i'm not so sure where I stand on it. Some say Abraham's bosom is a divided Hades, or 'Paradise' or it just means Heaven
