Jesse, Miles and Jeff - I know you guys do use the law of course, but how would you respond to someone who claims you do not? I am guessing the reason for that claim is based on the fact that you don't always refer to the "10 Commandments" perhaps. Have you run across this claim before, and if so, what is your response?
To me it is obvious you use the law, but I was wondering, do you begin your series of meetings a certain way, and then end up another way? Preaching 6 hours a day for a few days at the same place is bound to result in some variety of things.
thanks for the response...

I will start by preaching against something like drunkeness, fornication, homosexuality, etc etc.
Whenever you preach against sin, you are ultimately preaching the Law. And we preach against sin a lot.

Does the garbageman, take out the garbage? Does the candyman make candy? Does McDonalds sell Big Macs? Is the grass green? Does Starbucks sell carmel mocha macchiatto latte's? Is the sky blue? Is Miles Lewis single? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-pop? Does the universe ever end? Can God make a rock so big that he cannot lift it? Is Michael Jackson black or white? Are birds made for the air? Are fish made for the sea? Is Miles Lewis still single...?
But to answer the objection seriously, allow me to answer in a two-fold fashion... reading from left to right, as in O yeah? and Nuh uh!

that is what I thought - that preaching against sin WAS using the law, but wasn't sure how to repsond to that..just because you don't say "The Ten Commandments are..." of course doesn't mean you dn't use hte law, but the objection was raised so I thought I'd ask. Miles, when I saw you guys preach at Texas State in San Marcos my friend overheard some comment I think Jesse made about you being single and asking the ladies in the crowd if there was some woman who was willing to submit to you and cook your meals. (or something along those lines) I laughed so hard! Did Jesse actually say this? I was doing a one on one and didn't hear it myself. Man, I imagine it was like hitting a hornets nest with those vile females there that day. I assume it you didn't get any takers that day???

Miles has to find a potential somehow! I mean if Jed Smock can do it, so can St. Lewis.

"Holy" Hubert said that the question asked him the most on campus when he was preaching was, "What is sin?" The preaching of the Law takes care of this problem and this question. 1 John 3:4....Exodus 20

I believe strongly in what Wesley said, preach 90% Law and 10% grace.

Miles - whatever God's plan is for you, remember this if you have days where you are thinking "when am I going to meet her?" (I'm single as well and have days where I am thinking - hey Lord, did you forget about me down here?")
Then I think on this and quickly refocus: My greatest need is not a husband. My greatest need is to be saved from God's wrath. I deserve eternity in hell! By God's grace He saved me, and He owes me nothing, including a husband. If it is God's will I marry, and He has already met my GREATEST need through Christ, then why would I ever think He wouldn't provide the lesser needs in my life?
That usually convicts me right quick and I am grateful just to be alive and able to serve Him, even if it is alone for the moment.

If you are single and a Christian friends and family who are married are CONSTANTLY making jokes, "prophecies", predictions, promises, and the like. NONE of which they truly can make because no one knows aside from God when or if singles will marry. I love reading Paul's exhortations to singles, but the "I truly deserve hell" reminder certainly comes in handy on those days when everyone around me is thinking my life can't be complete apart from a husband. I can't imagine loving anyone more than I do Christ - He's kind of a hard act to follow!

Kerrigan, do I have to start calling you cupid? Gee, you're worse than a woman! Seriously, single Christians do struggle of course, it is a cycle (at least it has been for me) that is constantly going back and forth between the world's views that have corrupted our minds, and our undivided devotion to Christ. Often others are more zealous for singles to get married than they are. Maybe this is another topic for a new thread, but the world's teaching of dating and marriage is drastically different than what I see in Scripture. I personally agree with no dating, but courtship under the oversight, blessing, and involvement of family, church and pastor. Finding a godly husband/wife I see now is like finding the ol' needle in a haystack, a LARGE haystack actually, IF you are actually looking for a spouse on your own. WIth man, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible! Singles simply have to be obedient where the Lord leads, and if marriage is in God's will, they will meet each other along the way as they are both serving Him and are in the middle of His will. I see the blessings of both marriage and singleness. And I do see more and more for those in full time ministry how much a blessing a help mate would be to them, because the fight is a difficult one. That is why I am so glad Jesse and Jeff have each found their helpmates, and I will be in prayer for Krista and the other woman (whose name I don't know - my apologies) that the Lord will prepare them in all things in the coming months. Their prayers, encouragement, knowledge and wisdom as led by the Spirit will propel this ministry in an amazing way so that everyone will benefit. I'm excited to see how the Lord will work! Miles, even though you are single, you lack nothing, I'm sure you know that already. We all deserve hell, remember? I will be in prayer for you as well though, for God's perfect will and timing. Keep pressing on brother.

Why is this in the Doctrine and Theology forum?
|
|
|
Post by Jules on Apr 16, 2006 21:15:42 GMT -5
it started out as doctrine, but moved in a different direction. Sometimes that happens. I had a question about using the law in preaching, and then it moved into another topic. I suppose it could have been posted under open air preaching, but I started it here (before the news rules about posting in this section)

This is an "in house debate" on whether or not OAO uses biblical principles for preaching.
All the threads that were not "in house debates" were moved to the World-View Debating section.

What does in house mean?

|
Post by Jesse Morrell on Apr 16, 2006 23:33:08 GMT -5
There are debates between the unsaved and the unsaved.
There are debates between the unsaved and the saved.
And there are debates between the saved and the saved.
Only the third is an in house debate, meaing it's amongst Christians.
