OK, this should be interesting. Before I begin, let me say I honestly am not certain HOW I feel about these things, which is why I go before my wise and humble brothers (and sisters) in the Lord here. I especially am interested in the differing views as they stem out of holiness, Arminian, and Reformed theologies.
As I said before on some other posts, I am "going there" with the holiness teaching. (don't get TOO excited Miles, Jesse, Jeff, etc.) In my mind it is the same as election/predestination doctrine. It was clearly in scripture and I was "scared" of it. Holiness as a requirement for believers is also clearly in scripture. But when I actually studied election/predestination I walked away stronger and wiser for it even though I was initially scared to study it. I look at the teachings of holiness the same way now. I am "scared" somewhat of what I will find, but can't ignore the promtping of the Spirit to find out what the truth is. I suspect there is some wonderful depth to the teaching that will change my life once I understand and accept it, as I did the doctrines of grace.
THat said, I will tell you what I've seen in scripture and then post some questions. This first post will be long, but please please read it and respond. I really do want to understand this.....
There seems to be in the OT a series of steps, some of the steps may be one and the same, but each one leads to the next, etc. roughly they are (with some scripture to support):
1)atone
2) anoint
3) sanctify
4) consecrate
5) minister/serve
6) holiness
See Exodus 40:13, 28:41, 30:30 for starters.
There are some obvious things here, first, anointing was done TO sanctify the people or priest TO BECOME Holy. These steps are clearly in an order.
Consider this before I ask my questions:
Santify in the OT (Strongs 6942) meant to make or be clean. Sanctify in the NT means to "make holy, consecrate" Consecrate meant in the OT, in essence, to "fill and open hand" or to "be full".
Jesus said in the NT in John 17:17 that we are santified through the Truth and the truth is GOd's Word. Also in Ephesians 5:26 that sanctification comes by the washing of the Word. But in Hebrews 13:12 it says we are santified by the Blood of Christ.
Questions:
How does sanctification differ in the NT now? Is it by the Word or Blood or both in light of the verses above?
Does consecration (filling the open hand) in the NT now translate to the filling of the Holy SPirit, or anointing of the Spirit?
DO the steps in the OT now become somehow combined in a way?
How does holiness fit into all this?
I know this is a huge topic, but there is definately something there I am missing. There appears to be a connection between the steps of the OT and NT but somehow, between the atonement of CHrist and the function of the Holy SPirit, things have changed. I just need some help putting it all down straight.
How does all this this affect the holiness principle? Before, atonement, anointing, consecration, sanctification all had to take place BEFORE one could minister or be holy. Has that changed? How is one anointed today? How is one consecrated today? Do I even have the "steps" right for today?
