Hey guys, I need some assitance. Are we supposed to keep the commandments? I know it's impossible, and that only the Holy Spirit can give us the power to obey God, but doesn't repent mean to turn from sin, and didn't Paul say I have not known sin but by the law?
I want to be obediant, what are the guidelines?
I don't have a Church, so you guys are pretty much my only source of fellowship. Thanks.

Brother, I humbly ask you to join a fellowship of believers. "Let us not stop meeting together, as some have" the Bible says. Please brother, find a good Methodist (one that doesnt condone homosexuality, if that is possible) or Wesleyan, or Alliance assembly and meet with them.
But as to your question I will offer you my feeble understanding.
We are not free from keeping the law, buit we are free from the law. We owe nothing for our sin because of Jesus finished work on the cross. But Jesus crucifixion must also be ours, "for he that is dead is freed from sin". By faith we must reckon ourselves dead to sin, and alive to God. We do keep the law, but instead of through legal bondage, through the joys of pleasing God; by faith we uphold the law.
This is an amazing portion of study brother, I point you to Romans ch. 6 and the entire epistle of Paul to the Galatians.

That cracked me up. Should we keep God's commandments? Yes. Can we? Yes. John 14 1 John

He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. - 1 John 2:4-5 (KJV)
I think that sums it up nicely.

Hey guys, I need some assitance. Are we supposed to keep the commandments? I know it's impossible, and that only the Holy Spirit can give us the power to obey God.................I want to be obediant, what are the guidelines? Probably one of the most revealing scriptures in the New Testament for this subject is I John 5:3-- "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not grievous (burdensome)."In other words, if you say you really love God, then keeping His commandments is not a big deal; it should be a joy to obey God. Why do you say this is impossible? I John 3 should answer most of this. It clearly shows a believer's ability to walk in complete obedience to God. As far as the Holy Spirit obeying God through you, how is this your obedience, and not a work of God? Now for those of you who want to remind me about being saved by grace through faith, and not of works, I am talking about obeying and submitting to God post conversion, not repenting and being born again. Galatians 2:10 (the verse after 8 and 9) says " For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which He hath before ordained that we should walk in them."We are created to obey by choice, and compelled to obey by our great love for Him. Hope this helps. Oh, and by the way, the Bible has all the answers. Pray and ask God in faith to show you specific answers. He has never let me down.

'If ye love me, keep my commandments.' (John 14:15)

As long as you are not depending on your initial salvation on keeping the the Ten Commandments. Sanctification YES, but positional justification NO.
Hey, evanschaible- what's wrong with Independent Baptists? Even Biblethumper (on another thread) said that I'm a pretty good guy. We are not all like Westboro Baptist church!

As for Independant Baptist churches, well...they are primarily grounded in the Word of God and in holiness, so therefore I could not say "No" to such as these.
My uncle John is a baptist pastor and the man has walked holy for over 30 years.
I've seen some pentecostals speak in (false) tongues and fornicate all the while.
So...
Holiness speaking?
Baptist as a general rule.
Sin all you want?
Charismania as a general rule.
Let me clarify, however.
There are nasty baptists and great pentecostals.
Then again, there are nasty pentecostals and great baptsists.
The general rule i sthat, as a corporate whole, the penetcostals went way off track when the kenneth Hagins and Copelands were given a voice.
So....
Stick to Holiness.
The gifts?
YES!
Holiness?
Well....without it, you're not going to Heaven.
So the exhortation is to fellowship with the corporate whole of holiness Believers.
And it;'s found in the baptist church.
Am I correct?
I'm a Charismatic...so think about it.

Hey Biblethumper, there must be something wrong with me-I'm agreeing with you again.

hahaha.... well, as a Charismatic Baptist, and as one who fellowships primarily with Baptists who are cessasionists, and since I get along with more Independant Fundamentalists than the Charismatics, I'd say that by doctrinal persuasion I'm a moderate calvinist who could never sit in a MODERN Charismatic church (in general, that is)
