Here lately it seems that I have been infatuated with old hymns. I'd like to share some of them. It amazes me the difference between these hymns and most of today's music. If you have a hymn you want to share, post it! Here is another post we had awhile back called Amazing Hymns and Psalms- openairoutreach.proboards52.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=sayitall&thread=1143855948&page=1
There are Two Ways There are two ways in this, our day, one narrow and the other broad; Who now will go the narrow way will be despised by all abroad. This plainly God's word teaches us, the narrow entrance way go in; Strait is the gate, who enter thus, must first endure great suffering. There after, there's eternal rest, therefore, O man, thy way prepare, wilt thou be in God's kingdom blessed eternally with righteousness there. After this time nought shall transpire but peace and joy eternally; The righteous then, this shall aquire who God's will honor constantly. But he who the broad way shall go The stairs to hell, this is the same, He now is lost, God's wrath shall know, But blessed is he who's born again. To him hath God prepared, impearled A crown eternity shall hold; It shall not pass away, O world, Away then with your gain and gold O, take the strait and narrow way That thou the lasting crown obtain, Which God doth but His church convey Which He hath cleansed from sin and stain. Therefore away with all man's gain Desire, vain pomp, and arrogance; Turn sharp away from all known sin, So thou be known as God's child hence. Nought other can the way become, Who will eternal suffering flee, Must righteous be, this is the sum; Go on your way, nor fancy see. Press toward the mark till endless day, For who the prize at last will gain, All must forsake upon this way Would he the lasting crown obtain.

Ye Christian Heralds
Ye Christian herald, go proclaim Salvation in Immanuel's name; To distant climes the tidings bear, And plant the Rose of Sharon there.
God shield you with a wall of fire, With holy zeal your hearts inspire, Bid raging winds their fury cease, And calm the savage breast to peace.
And when our labors all are o'er Then shall we meet to part no more Meet with blood-bought throng to fall And crown the Savior Lord of all!
Shall I Crucify My Saviour
Shall I crucify my Saviour when for me he bore such loss? Shall I put to shame my Saviour Can I nail Him to the Cross?
Are temptations so alluring? Do earth pleasures so enthrall? That I cannot love my Saviour Well enough to leave them all?
Twas my sins that crucified Him Shall they crucify Him yet? Blackest day of nameless anguish, Can my thankless soul forget?
Oh, the kindly hands of Jesus, Pouring blessing on all men! Bleeding nail scarred hands of Jesus! Can I nail them once again?
Chorus
Shall I crucify my Saviour? Crucify my Lord again? Once! oh, once! I crucified Him! Shall I crucify again?

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
Must Jesus bear the cross alone, And all the world go free? No, there’s a cross for everyone, And there’s a cross for me.
How happy are the saints above, Who once went sorrowing here! But now they taste unmingled love, And joy without a tear.
The consecrated cross I’ll bear Till death shall set me free; And then go home my crown to wear, For there’s a crown for me.
Upon the crystal pavement down At Jesus’ piercèd feet, Joyful I’ll cast my golden crown And His dear Name repeat.
O precious cross! O glorious crown! O resurrection day! When Christ the Lord from Heav’n comes down And bears my soul away.

We only sing hymns in the church I attend and also have found that there is so much doctrine found in them. My favourite is 'There is a Fountain' (I placed this in the previous thread) here are a few more I like:
AT CALVARY (look particularly at the second verse)
1 Years I spent in vanity and pride, Caring not my Lord was crucified, Knowing not it was for me He died On Calvary.
Mercy there was great, and grace was free; Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burdened soul found liberty, At Calvary.
2 By God's Word at last my sin I learned; Then I trembled at the law I'd spurned, Till my guilty soul imploring turned To Calvary.
3 Now I've giv'n to Jesus everything, Now I gladly own Him as my King, Now my raptured soul can only sing Of Calvary.
4 Oh, the love that drew salvation's plan! Oh, the grace that brought it down to man! Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span At Calvary!
DWELLING IN BEULAH LAND
1 Far away the noise of strife upon my ear is falling. Then I know the sins of earth beset on every hand. Doubt and fear and things of earth in vain to me are calling. None of these shall move me from Beulah Land.
I’m living on the mountain, underneath a cloudless sky. I’m drinking at the fountain that never shall run dry. O yes! I’m feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply, For I am dwelling in Beulah Land.
2 Far below the storm of doubt upon the world is beating. Sons of men in battle long the enemy withstand. Safe am I within the castle of God’s Word retreating. Nothing then can reach me—’tis Beulah Land.
3 Let the stormy breezes blow, their cry cannot alarm me; I am safely sheltered here, protected by God’s hand. Here the sun is always shining, here there’s naught can harm me. I am safe forever in Beulah Land.
4 Viewing here the works of God, I sink in contemplation. Hearing now His blessèd voice, I see the way He planned. Dwelling in the Spirit here I learn of full salvation. Gladly I will tarry in Beulah Land.

Here is a hymn about street preaching
Lo Wisdom Crieth in the Streets
Lo, wisdom crieth in the streets In solemn tones of warning Amid the concourse loud repeats The end of time is coming
Hear O ye craving restless throng The Gospel invitation It tells you what you've needed long The gift of God's salvation
Young men, in all your revelry, Young ladies, proud and tho'tless Will you be saved eternally Or die forever hopeless?
T'ward hell you hasten in conceit You plunge in sin's perdition Yet wisdom cries upon the street, In God there is redemption
Ye aged sinners surely know Your end of time is coming And youthful summers, swiftly flow Down to the vale of mourning
O Lord, the old, the young, the poor, The rich have one probation; Do Thou help men to sin no more And find Thy great salvation, Amen

That's right you can't beat the old hymns.
I was saved in a church that played only CCM. It was only when I started to attend an Independent Baptist church that I realised what I had been missing and what type of music/lyrics pleases God.
Thanks for the post Josh.

One of my favorites:
When we walk with the Lord and the light of His word, What a glory He sheds on our way, While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with with all who will trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear, Not a sorrow we share, But our toil He doth rechly repay, Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.
But we never can prove the delights of His love, until all on the altar we lay, For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows, are for those who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet will we sit at His feet, or we'll walk by his side in the way, what He says we will do, where He sends we will go, never fear, only trust and obey.
Refrain: Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Come, Heaven-Bound Pilgrims
Come, heaven bound pilgrims and join in God's praise Come seek now his blessing and learn of his ways, In humble devotion how low at his feet, In true spirit worship, his favor entreat.
Let each one consider the price we have cost, Let each on be burdened with souls that are lost, And seek that infilling of pow'r from above, That fits us for service and fills us with love.
Remember each other in true, fervent pray'r, Pray too for God's servants that they may declare The message of truth with an anxious desire That all be enkindled with heavenly fire.
O gracious Redeemer be with us we pray, Breath on us thy Spirit to show us the way, And fill us with goodness, with peace and delight, That all to thy glory may shine as a light.

The Holy Ghost is Here by Charles H Spurgeon
The Holy Ghost is here Where saints in prayer agree As Jesus' parting Gift is near Each pleading company
Not far away is He To be by prayer bro't night, But here is present majesty As in His courts on high.
He dwells within our soul, An ever welcome guest; He reigns with absolute control, As monarch in the breast.
Obedient to Thy will, We wait to feel Thy pow'r O Lord of life, our hopes fulfil, And bless the hallowed hour, Amen.

Am I a Soldier of the Cross?
Am I a soldier of the cross, A foll'wer of the Lamb? And shall I fear to own His cause Or blush to speak His name?
Must I be carried to the skies On flow'ry beds of ease, While others fought to win the prize, And sailed thro' bloody seas?
Are there no foes for me to face? Must I not stem the flood? Is this vile world a friend to grace, To keep me on to God?
Sure I must fight, if I would reign; Increase my courage Lord; I'll bear the toil, endure the pain, Supported by Thy Word.
Thy saints in all this glorious war Shall conquer tho' they die: They view the triumph from afar, And seize it with thier eye.
When that illustrious day shall rise, And all Thy armies shine In robes of vict'ry through the skies, The glory shall be Thine.

Why Did the Nations Join To Slay
Why did the nations join to slay The Lord's anointed son? Why did they cast His laws away, And tread His gosple down?
The Lord that sits above the skies, Derides their rage below, He speaks with vengeance in His eyes, And strikes their spirits through,
I call Him my eternal son, And raise Him from the dead, I make My holy hill His throne, And wide His kingdom spread,
Ask me my son and then enjoy, The uttmost heathen lands, The rod of iron shall destroy, The rebel that withstands,
Be wise ye rulers of the earth, Obey the anointed Lord, Adore the King of heavenly birth, And tremble at His word,
With humble love address His throne, For if He frown ye die, Those are secure and those alone, Who on His grace rely.

This is a wonderful hymn. Everyone should read it.
Have You Counted the Cost
Have you counted the cost that a soul should be lost Since you didn't go calling today? Have you counted the sin, and the souls you didn't win, Since you didn't go calling today?
Have you thought on dismay that the sinner must pay, Since you didn't go calling today? Have you failed to regard what is you lost reward, Since you did not go calling today?
Had you counted the price of the Lord's sacrifice, When you didn't go calling today? Did you think to obey, when theLord had to pay That you might go calling today?
REFRAIN Calling for Jesus Let us all go out calling today Calling Calling Calling Let us all go out calling today!

A SOUL WINNER FOR JESUS
I want to be a soul winner for Jesus every day; He does so much for me; I want to aid the lost sinner to leave his erring way, And be from bondage free.
A soul winner for Jesus, A soul winner for Jesus, Oh let me be each day; A soul winner for Jesus, A soul winner for Jesus, He's done so much for me.
I want to be a soul winner and bring the lost to Christ That they His grace may know; I want to live for Christ ever, and do His blessed will Because He loves me so.
I want to be a soul winner till Jesus calls for me, To lay my burdens down, I want to hear Him say, "Servant, you've gathered many sheaves, Receive a starry crown."

Holy as Thou, O Lord, Is None
Holy as Thou, O Lord, is none; Thy holiness is all Thine own; And from the vast unbounded sea A drop is ours, derived from Thee.
When Thy own purity we share, Thine only glory we declare; And, humbled into nothing, own, Holy and pure is God alone.
Sole, self-existing God and Lord, By all Thy heav'nly host adored. Let all on earth bow down to Thee, And own Thy peerless majesty.

Shall atheists dare insult the cross
Shall atheists dare insult the cross Of our Redeemer, God? Shall infidels reproach His laws, Or trample on His blood?
What if He choose mysterious ways To cleanse us from our faults? May not the works of sovereign grace Transcend our feeble thoughts?
What if His Gospel bids us fight With flesh, and self, and sin, The prize is most divinely bright That we are called to win.
What if the foolish and the poor His glorious grace partake, This but confirms His truth the more, For so the prophets spake.
Do some that own His sacred Name Indulge their souls in sin? Jesus should never bear the blame, His laws are pure and clean.
Then let our faith grow firm and strong, Our lips profess His Word; Nor blush nor fear to walk among The men that love the Lord.

"Be Still, My Soul" by Catharina von Schlegel, 1697-? Translated by Jane Borthwick, 1813-1897
1. Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change He faithful will remain. Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heavenly, Friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
2. Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake To guide the future as He has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
3. Be still, my soul, though dearest friends depart And all is darkened in the vale of tears; Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart, Who comes to soothe thy sorrows and thy fears. Be still, my soul; thy Jesus can repay From His own fulness all He takes away.
4. Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

YOU NEVER MENTIONED HIM TO ME
When in the better land before the bar we stand, How deeply grieved our souls will be; If any lost one there should cry in deep despair, "You never mentioned Him to me."
CHORUS: You never mentioned Him to me, You helped me not the way to see; You met me day by day and knew I was astray, Yet never mentioned Him to me."
O let us spread the word _ where e'er it may be heard, Help groping souls the light to see, That yonder none may say, "You showed me not the way." You never mentioned Him to me. CHORUS
A few sweet words may guide a lost one to His side, Or turn sad eyes on Calvary; So work as days go by, that yonder none may cry, "You never mentioned Him to me." CHORUS

Interesting fact: This hymn was actually written by a gentleman that R.A. Torrey led to Christ. I read about it in one of Torrey's books.

I am just starting to appreciate hymns. We sang this one Sunday am and it became one of my favorites. Now every time requests are taken they know I will choose this one... www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBp5ZIF3a4AO To Be Like Thee O to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer, This is my constant longing and prayer; Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures, Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear. Refrain O to be like Thee! O to be like Thee, Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art; Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness; Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart. O to be like Thee! full of compassion, Loving, forgiving, tender and kind, Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting, Seeking the wandering sinner to find. Refrain O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit, Holy and harmless, patient and brave; Meekly enduring cruel reproaches, Willing to suffer others to save. Refrain O to be like Thee! Lord, I am coming Now to receive anointing divine; All that I am and have I am bringing, Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine. Refrain O to be like Thee! while I am pleading, Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love; Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling, Fit me for life and Heaven above. Refrain

This is a contemporary version of this song... I love it!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-OOjfaBGnAJesus Paid it All I hear the Savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small; Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all.” Refrain Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. For nothing good have I Whereby Thy grace to claim, I’ll wash my garments white In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb. Refrain And now complete in Him My robe His righteousness, Close sheltered ’neath His side, I am divinely blest. Refrain Lord, now indeed I find Thy power and Thine alone, Can change the leper’s spots And melt the heart of stone. Refrain When from my dying bed My ransomed soul shall rise, “Jesus died my soul to save,” Shall rend the vaulted skies. Refrain And when before the throne I stand in Him complete, I’ll lay my trophies down All down at Jesus’ feet. Refrain
