A group of us went to downtown Chapel Hill, NC to do some witnessing this past Friday night (7/14). Tony and Shayna came and brought their two friends from the Goldsboro area, Harlan and Blair. Carl and his daughter Sarah were there along with Mark Hooks from Fayetteville, NC. It was a wonderful time of fellowship and sowing the seeds of the Gospel to those who are sitting in the shadow of death. We met at a coffee shop and then went downtown in my "Conversion Van." It is really a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan, but if you were to look at the bumper stickers on the back of it, you would know it is really a Conversion Van at heart. We started up Franklin St., passing out tracts along the way.
Someone stopped to do a 1-2-1, so I went back to the two young ladies who I had just given Smart Cards to. I began talking to them about whether the Smart Card changed color or not. Their names are Jasmine and Stonay. They ended up being lesbians, but Jasmine was very open to the Gospel, while Stonay was kind of apathetic. In the end, Jasmine said she would be thinking about what I had said and we kept going. You can listen to me witness to Jasmine and Stonay at My Xanga.
We continued passing out tracts along the way and eventually split up into two teams so we could hit both sides of the street with the Gospel. As we were walking, we came upon a group of teens who were sitting close to an old building. I could tell write off the bat that they were a mocking group. The group tried witnessing to them, but I think only one person out of the group or around ten was open to the Gospel. I thank God that Shayna pursued a conversation with her. Pray for her and for the group as a whole. These are the people that we need to literally weep for! Eventually Tony found a good corner to preach from. It was the major intersection of downtown Chapel Hill. Tony went first and he lifted up his voice like a trumpet. As he preached people would come and go as they listened and waited for the walk signal. When cars stopped at the traffic light, people would role down their windows to listen to the Gospel. Tony did a great job. At the end, two police who were nearby told us we had to stop. They gave no good reason and were very rude. You can listen to the conversation for yourself at My Xanga.
I knew they were being unlawful in what they were telling us, so I decided to go into the nearby restaurant, look up the number for the local police station and give their supervisor a call. She came right over to where we were to talk to me. She said that she was told we were blocking the sidewalk and "making" people stop. So UNTRUE! She said that is why we were told to stop. That is a TOTAL LIE! You can listen to me talk to the Sgt. for yourself at My Xanga. The police who told us to stop even had the nerve to pull up in their car and lie about the situation right to her face! And when I told her that I had them on audio saying something Totally different, she acted as if she didn't even care! Who do we have serving us these days? What is this world coming to? Anyway, we got to keep on preaching, so that is what really matters. As I was getting ready to preach next, I warmed up by thumping my Bible. As I was thumping my Bible, a young Christian lady asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was getting ready to preach and that I as reclaiming the name BibleThumper. I began preaching shortly after I talked to her.
After I got done, Sarah decided to jump up and preach. She looked a little nervous, so I introduced her. That way, she COULDN'T get out of preaching no matter how scared she is! She did great! She preached with conviction and concern. I thank God for the fact that she was willing to stand-up for Jesus and His Gospel!
We continued handing out tracts and doing 1-2-1's. It was getting late, so we decided to start heading back to the Conversion Van. On the way back, we continued witnessing and handing out tracts. We were passing a funeral home and I started to jokingly preach under my breath. Carl told me to jump up and preach, so I did. It was a great springboard for preaching the Gospel. It wasn't a busy part of town, but many heard as they walked by and some even stopped to listen.
One young man who stopped to listen was a Jew named Joseph. He wasn't a devout Jew or even a religious Jew, just one by birth. He said that he liked what I had to say, but then said that he didn't even believe in God. I believe this was just a front he put up to ease the pricking and poking of his conscience. I only got to speak to him for a couple of minutes, because his friend was leaving him, but he got an Atheist Test Tract and went on his way. He heard the full Gospel and knew the truth. Many times that is all we can do. We took a group picture at some point in time during the night. The only person missing from the picture is the one who took it, Carl:
As always, it was good sowing seeds with Tony, Shayna, Carl, Sarah and Mark. I am especially thankful that Mark drove around 2 hours to witness with us. Now that is devotion! He probably didn't make it home until about 2-3am and he had to get up early in the morning! It was great to meet Harlan and Blair and I look forward to witnessing alongside of them again. On the way home, we all got hungry, so Tony, Shayna, Harlan, Blair and myself stopped at Waffle House. Of course, everyone in the place got a Gospel Tract of some kind and we got a chance to talk extensively to the staff. Shayna gave out quite a few of the Living Waters Gospel of John's to the staff. May God's Word not return void! Pray for those who heard!
Any and all of the audio from this night can be heard at My Xanga. Sorry, didn't feel like messing with all the codes and stuff right now...
