Let's try and find a more un-biased source of news than Fox News, next time, shall we?
Further, from what I read in the article, it seems like ANY parade that goes past their station, the firefighters must stand outside in uniform or participate. It seems to me like the firefighters are just getting their panties in a bunch because they were forced to do something they didn't want to do.
You know what? Too bad.
That's part of their job, to be a visible part of the community during community events such as this parade. Would they refuse to put out a fire at the house of a homosexual person or couple?
Just because you don't agree with something doesn't mean you have to disrespect it.

I wonder why they don't force state employees who are atheists to take part in a Christian parade? This statement is hardly a good comparison...

As a matter of fact, I did read the article. I found no mention of atheist firefighters, or any state employee for that matter, being allowed to opt out of participating in a Christian parade. If you would kindly point to where that is? Otherwise, I would challenge that it is you who didn't read the article. Actually, that statement is quite a good comparison. They obviously are uncomfortable around homosexuals, so why would they want to run into a burning house, putting their own lives in jeopardy, to save the people who they are uncomfortable around? What if those "provocative" t-shirts are hanging from the walls? There are countless other scenarios where they would be uncomfortable with that. So it is quite a valid question. Which is worse, and which is easier? Standing along a parade route watching these people, or running into a burning building and risking your life to save someone who makes you incredibly uncomfortable?
