I have been reading "Holy" Hubert's autobiography called, "Bless Your Dirty Heart" and it is great. I recommend every O/A preacher read it. I found that Hubert answers questions and objections very well. One I just read, and thought I would share, is about the Death Penalty. I am sure that this comes up a lot in the O/A, especially on campuses. I will be starting to preach on campuses soon (debut at NC State this coming Monday), so I look forward to putting some of these into practice. The heckler asked if Hubert believed in the Death Penalty, to which Hubert replied yes. He said that God approves of it in the O.T. and the N.T., especially in the Death of Jesus Christ for sinners. The heckler shouted back, "But taking the life of a murderer will not return the life of the one murdered!" Hubert's response is very good: "Do you believe society should be protected?" Heckler: "Yes" Hubert: "Presume a man with a machine gun is about to mow down this audience. The police kill him to protect us. Now if you don't believe the policeman was justified in killing the man, then you don't believe that society should be protected. If you don't believe society should be protected, you love no man. By society, I mean total society, irrespective of race, color, creed or what have you. You are to protect the rich and poor, the black and white, the oppressor and the oppressed. As long as we have lawless people in our society, we will need police on the beat, a sheriff and deputies in the county and an army and National Guard to protect our nation." Then Hubert goes on to say, "I believe in Revolution young man. I believe you need a deep one in your heart. You need Jesus Christ to take over your life. When that happens, you won't want to see one human being on life suffer. You will believe every human being on Earth should be protected. You will value man as you never valued him before. You will not value men according to the texture of their skin, intelligence, their clothes, or their positions in a structured society, their wealth or their poverty. You will value them in accordance with the knowledge that they are God's creation, and from the Creator they receive their rights. You will feel these rights should be protected and enforced by law."
