Tuesday May 27, 2008-University of Cincinnati-Cincinnati, Ohio: The weather forecast said it was supposed to rain today. In the morning the skies were overcast but it did not rain.
Sister Elizabeth and I left later than normal due to the weather situation and had a delay parking so we did not arrive on campus until around 1:00 PM. Brother Rick had already arrived and been preaching for some time. A faithful sister from a local church had also showed up to support and witness on the sidelines.
Brother Rick had a handful of listeners when we arrived around 1:00 PM. Brother Rick turned the preaching over to me around 1:10 PM.
I began preaching and was able to draw a crowd of 40-50. The crowds were smaller than last week but more attentive and asking better questions. I continued preaching until 2:20 PM and then turned the crowd over to Brother Rick.
Brother Rick preached and built the crowd up to about 80-85. He continued preaching until 3:40 PM and then turned the crowd back over to me.
I preached from 3:40 PM to 4:10 PM. Drops of rain had begun to fall around 4:00 PM and some of the crowd began to leave. It began to come down very heavy at 4:10 PM and the crowd dispersed. We left the campus in the rain.
Wednesday May 28, 2008-University of Cincinnati-Cincinnati, Ohio: Sister Elizabeth did not feel well so she did not go with us to the campus. Brother Rick and I arrived on campus around 11:40 AM. It was a cool, clear, sunny day.
When we arrived on campus and approached the free speech lawn we had reserved, we noticed there were two large waterslides being set up in our area. Apparently, what had happened was this organization had scheduled this event for this day some time ago, and had planned on putting them in another area of the lawn where we were preaching.
However, the only area where the hoses could reach the waterslides was in our area so that was where they set it up in. Brother Rick tried to preach for a short time in this area but it was difficult due to the noise coming from the slides (that of an air pump).
We moved to another area of the lawn and Brother Rick preached there for a few minutes until the lady in charge of scheduling showed up. Brother Rick and I went to her office to talk to her.
She was a very nice and helpful woman. We explained our situation; she apologized and said we needed to try to share the area because that was the only area for free speech.
She then came up with the idea for us to stand on the memorial wall and preach facing the Tangeman Center. This would move us away from the slides but still keep us in the free speech area. In the past, we had been told we could not stand on the memorial wall. We told her this but she gave us permission to stand on the wall and preach, signed it on our permit and then called security not to ask us to step down, since she had authorized it.
Brother Rick and I headed back out to the free speech spot and he invited me to start the preaching. It was now 12:35 PM. I began preaching and was soon able to gather a crowd of 60-70. The area we were preaching in made it difficult for the crowd to sit down in the shade as they had been doing. This caused them to have to stand up and for this reason they were more rowdy than usual at first but soon calmed down some. I continued preaching until 1:35 PM and then turned the crowd over to Brother Rick.
Brother Rick preached from 1:35 PM to 3:20 PM to crowds from 40-70. I had some good conversations while Brother Rick was preaching. I was able to have some civil conversation and seemingly make some progress with one of our fiercest hecklers from last year and this year.
Another, fierce heckler was on hand filming us all day long and taunting us with false accusations and slanderous insults.
Brother Rick turned the crowd of 40-50 over to me around 3:20 PM. I preached from 3:20 PM until 4:00 PM. The slide activity had been a big flop in my opinion with few students participating but they did not interfere with us.
By now the students were seated on the memorial wall in the shade and sitting close to us. I preached to them and though they heckled, argued, and insulted me they were civil by keeping their distance and listening as I preached and answered questions. The crowd built up to about 70.
At 4:00 PM as we headed to our vehicle, the fierce heckler with the video camera continued to follow us around everywhere even to the restroom. We had many witnesses as we asked him repeatedly to please stop stalking us.
Eventually, he realized he could probably get in trouble for doing this and backed off. Amazingly, it seems this man is a graduate student and employee of the university.
Thursday May 29, 2008-Wright State University-Dayton, Ohio: We had planned on going to the University of Cincinnati today, but last night we discovered that the Wright State University newspaper had written an article about the incident where I was issued a trespass warning and reported I had assaulted a student.
The article was totally sensationalized, exaggerated, and non factual. We decided to capitalize on the controversy and publicity and visit the campus.
Sister Elizabeth, Brother Rick and I arrived on campus at just before noon. Upon our arrival, the African brother from the local church we had attended (Brother K.) was already preaching inside the barricades. Brother Rick called ahead of time and requested the barricades be set up to keep the students from closing in on us.
I began preaching at 12:05 PM and soon gathered a small crowd. Some members of the pagan group that had gotten me kicked off campus arrived and began to stand around us with their backs toward us. In spite of the opposition, some of the students sat down in the sun on the brickyard and began to ask good questions and listened attentively. Most of these students seemed to be sincere seekers of truth.
The crowd gradually built up to about 50-60 and became more rowdy. The student who can never seem to get his own crowd or write any of his own songs showed up with his guitar to stand in front of us and sing other people’s songs to our crowd.
I turned the preaching over to Brother Rick at 1:15 PM and took a seat. Brother Rick did an excellent job of preaching and keeping the crowd under control. The crowd grew to around 70.
One student from the pagan group showed up during Brother Rick’s preaching with the man who was in charge of lifting my trespass warning (Mr. D.). They stood and watched together for some time. It seemed this student was trying to get us into trouble but it did not work. Mr. D. was friendly to me, seemed to enjoy the event, and told me he thought the barricades were a good idea for both parties.
During Brother Rick’s preaching the pagan group and the homosexual groups both continued to grow in number and had brought poster boards from the previous year and new ones to hold up and protest against God’s Word.
As soon as Mr. D. left, the pagans and homosexuals began to crowd around the barricades holding up their poster boards. Unfortunately, this drove away most of the sincere listeners and left us with only the homosexuals and pagans.
Brother Rick preached until about 2:20 PM and then turned it over to Brother K. He had not been preaching long when we arrived earlier in the day. He preached hard for about 20 minutes and then Brother Rick preached for the remaining 15 to 20 minutes of the day (the policy of this school requires us to stop preaching at 3:00 PM). My wife was unable to preach due to her cough and the nausea from the sickening affection displayed by the homosexual students.
Near the end of the day as the others were preaching I had some very good conversations with a few sincere seekers of truth.
The pagans and homosexuals (including a lesbian professor who married another lesbian professor in Canada and have children) called the police at 3:00 PM to make sure we were forced to leave on time.
Brother K., Brother Rick, Sister Elizabeth and I all ate and fellowshipped together after we left the campus. Brother K. seems very interested in campus preaching and we praise God for raising up another laborer for the harvest (Matthew 9:37-38).
Friday May 30, 2008-University of Cincinnati-Cincinnati, Ohio: Brother Rick headed out early today to go back home. Sister Elizabeth and I arrived in the parking lot of the University of Cincinnati around 11:40 AM. I had to wait for a parking spot, so I asked Sister Elizabeth to go and start the meeting.
Sister Elizabeth began preaching around 11:50 AM and I waited until a parking space opened up. I arrived on campus around 12:25 PM and Sister Elizabeth had gathered a handful of listeners. Sister R. from the local church where we were staying was there to support and witness.
Surprisingly, Brother Rick showed up around 12:45 PM. We spotted a police officer and filed a complaint against the stalker. As we talked to the officer about the student stalking us, the student we were talking about happened to walk by. The officer asked the student stalker to stop and told him, he needed to talk to him. This defiant stalker responded with profanity to the campus officer.
By 1:10 PM Sister Elizabeth had built the crowd up to about 30-40 and then turned the preaching over to Brother Rick. Brother Rick preached from 1:10 PM to 2:00 PM and built the crowd up to about 50-70. He then left the campus to head home. It is always a blessing to have him labor with us.
I preached from 2:00 PM to 3:40 PM to the crowd of 50-70. A police officer showed up and kept and eye on things but never interfered. The crowd was an unusual mix of sincere seekers of truth, hecklers and perverts. There were many good questions but the hecklers and perverts fought hard to disrupt every step of the way.
I had several good conversations during the day before I began preaching with students we seemed to have made an impression on.
