This is a very brief update from the front lines of the campuses in Georgia and Florida. Since the beginning of the fall 2007 semester, Evangelista and I have preached at 10 different campuses in 6 different states. The following is a report of our latest ministry:
Kennesaw State University --- 9/26
Evangelista and I were graciously invited to be a part of the annual Southeast Open-Air Preacher’s Conference again this year. During the day, we preached with a group of campus preachers at this very liberal and intolerant campus. Our presence there was certainly NOT welcomed! The crowds were screaming almost immediately, and lots of homosexuals and their supporters were on hand as well. I also had the privilege of preaching a short message on Wednesday night from John 12 at the conference.
Georgia Tech --- 9/27
Another great opportunity to preach with a group of campus/open-air preachers at yet another exceedingly liberal and sin-tolerant campus. These kids did not want us there, and made excuses for sin all day long. We did have a few very productive one-on-one conversations, and for the most part we preached unhindered with a truth horn for about 4 hours, each preacher taking a turn. As usual, our fiercest opposition came from the “christians” who ferociously defend sin and will not make any attempt to declare Christ’s mandate to “go and sin no more!” (John 5:14 and 8:11)
Florida State University --- 10/2 through 10/4
Our first official preach (alone) as a fulltime team, Evangelista and I had absolutely no problem getting the attention and drawing very large crowds each day. We had upwards of 150 the first day, and as usual, the kids defend their right to sin and live in revelry. Each day was spent preaching from large portions of scripture on a variety of topics such as repentance, faith, holiness, moral law, the love of God, the fear of the Lord, and many others.
We also answered sincere questions, while avoiding the foolish and unlearned ones. The 3rd day we were moved to an alternate location and had very large crowds of up to 200. The last hour or so we were drowned out by a couple of musicians with instruments in hand, so I pulled a smaller crowd off to the side and answered more questions. It was a very effective 3 days. Also, one of the officers informed us that we were the first preachers there this semester.
We also had a chance to minister to and pray with a couple of the students who enquired of us. This is significant in that we are usually seen as cultish or proud, but these students were very sincere and wanted help. Obviously, the ministries that they are involved with don’t seem to be helping them live biblically victorious over sin.
University of South Florida --- 10/8 through 10/12
Evangelista and I were very happy to be able to preach on this campus. Our good friend Bro. Larry K. was very gracious to allow us to park our RV at his home. This is one less thing to be concerned about, as we are sometimes faced with parking and moving and the costs can really add up.
A full week on this campus really refreshed us. This campus allows us to come and preach without interruption, and it went very well. We have a great testimony of a young man being much convicted on Monday, and repenting of cigarette smoking in front of the whole crowd as a testimony to his faith in Christ. As the week progressed, and the students refused to heed the Word of God, and the crowds raged and seethed with anger, we noticed this young man showing up each day with Bible in hand and nodding in approval as we preached. I approached Bradley mid-week and asked him how it was going, and he was so grateful for us coming to preach. He then testified as to how he was sure that we were going about our ministry entirely wrong at first, but as he listened and looked up the scriptures that we preached, he in his own words said “I got it, man! I realized why you guys preach the way you do!”
Another young female student was ecstatic about us coming and preaching to the students. And yet another young man was very glad to see us preaching, as he was a transfer student from Missouri, and actually knows Bro. Jed Smock, a pioneer of the campus preaching circuit. We also were interviewed by a graduate student who is writing a dissertation on confrontational evangelism.
Nevertheless, we were forced to leave the students with a stern rebuke on Friday, and they cheered as we left. We promised to return the week of 10/30-11/1.
University of Central Florida --- 10/17 and 10/18
Evangelista and I drove the 2 hours over to Orlando to preach this campus on Wednesday, and we immediately drew a crowd of 50-65 students. After about an hour or so, a group of sincere students had a lecture on the existence of God in this particular free speech area, so we stopped preaching for the 2 hours or so and listened in and chatted with some of the Christians on this campus. I say Christians because these kids are serious about repentance and living obedient to Christ. We were very happy to see this group of kids trying to reach their peers.
Thursday turned out to be a perfect day to preach, as Evangelista and I had moderate sized crowds of 50-100 throughout the day. They posed the typical questions about judging, original sin, and the unconditional love of God, etc. We have resolved to answer only sincere and biblical questions, as the foolish and unlearned ones only lead to strife and quarreling (II Timothy 2:23). We stayed about 5 ½ hours preaching, teaching, and answering the questions of the students, and then headed back to Tampa.
PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR OUTREACHES EACH WEEKDAY ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES EVERYWHERE!
Lovingly serving Christ,
JK and Evangelista
