Sunday September 14, 2008-Richmond, Virginia: Sister Elizabeth and I left Charlottesville early in the morning and drove to a church near the Richmond area. We attended services there and I preached in the evening service from Matthew 6:10 on “Advancing the Kingdom”.
Monday September 15, 2008-Richmond, Virginia: After driving around much of the day yesterday and getting lost, going to church and preaching I decided to spend the day seeking the Lord in Bible study and prayer and did not go to the campus.
Tuesday September 16, 2008-Virginia Commonwealth University-Richmond, Virginia: It was raining today in the morning. As Sister Elizabeth and I drove to campus it was still raining.
My good friend, Brother Ross who I met last year at East Carolina University had preached here last week for two days and really shook up the whole campus with crowds ranging from 250-330. He had just begun preaching when I met him a year ago but has developed into a very effective preacher.
One young man from the church where I had preached yesterday definitely seemed to have the call to preach open air and it seems God has been trying to deal with him about this. He was stirred and challenged by the message on “Advancing the Kingdom” and took the day off from work to meet us there.
It was drizzling rain when we arrived on campus but seemed to stop just before the open air meeting was to start. I began preaching in the drizzle around 11:45 AM. This school seemed to be the exact opposite of the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia students asked good questions, intelligent, listened well, mature, and were civil. The Virginia Commonwealth University students had very few good questions, did not listen well, and were immature and uncivil.
I soon gathered a crowd of around 200 that formed a circle around me. The students would run circles around me, speak all kinds of foolishness, homosexuals would kiss, girls would pull their shirts up, yell, etc. This school is infested with homosexuals, atheists, communists, feminists, God haters, anti-America, Obama voters, and sin all you want because God loves me no matter what christianettes. In other words it is a typical liberal arts college. Little thinking involved at this campus just acting, dancing, singing, and expressing yourself.
Much of the time it was difficult to have much quality interaction or preaching because there was so much chaos and disruption going on. When I would get an intelligent question or comment most of the students would scream, disrupt and distract. They did understand the simple message of “repent or perish” (Luke 13:3, 5) which was about all they needed to hear and could understand.
Several police officers came out and kept an eye on things for some time and later left. After about an hour as the crowd closed in on me, I moved over to a ledge and continued preaching. By this time the crowd had dwindled down to 30-60.
As the crowd thinned out to 30-60 several students stood on the ledge next to me and hollered while I tried to answer questions. At this time, I was able to have a better dialogue and interaction with some of the students.
There was one large white male student who asked some good questions about the Bible and certain scriptures and really listened well to my answers. Brother Ross seemed to have really made an impact on this young man because the week before this young man was screaming and cursing in Brother Ross face.
I continued to preach on the ledge until around 2:30 PM and got in a good conversation with several students. One student was a homosexual and thought he was a Christian too. I did not know this young man was a homosexual nor did I know he thought he was a Christian.
At 2:30 PM, I stepped down from the ledge and went and sat down to talk to this young man as well as the large white male student and several serious Calvinists from the campus ministries.
I showed the young homosexual Romans 1:26-27 and he then he admitted to being a homosexual and a Christian. I had been very patient and thorough with him. Once he saw he could not continue in his “deathstyle” and be a Christian he left.
I continued to talk to the large white male student and several serious Calvinists while a few other students listened on until around 3:15 PM.
The young man from the church who was stirred by the message had quite an eye opening experience observing the preaching. He witnessed to students most of the day and stood up for the truth of the Bible. Unfortunately, he left campus before I could call on him to preach. He had parked in a limited time parking spot.
Wednesday September 17, 2008-Virginia Commonwealth University-Richmond, Virginia: Today was a beautiful sunny day and not too hot. Sister Elizabeth and I drove to the campus and I began preaching at 11:45 AM.
A few minutes after I began preaching, a young man came running up to me shrieking and shaking and kneeled down before me crying for me to save him. Everyone thought this mockery was hilarious and he lay on the ground shrieking, flopping like a dying roach and shaking for about 20-30 minutes.
A crowd of 80-120 gathered in a circle around me. It was similar to the previous day. In addition to the young man on the ground flopping and shaking, the other hecklers from the day before showed up. They danced around me, ran around me, ranted about the “flying spaghetti monster”, circled the circle and complained about hate speech as they threatened to kill me for my intolerance, lesbians and homosexuals kissed and simulated vulgar sex acts, girls exposed themselves, etc.
Once again, the police showed up. After about an hour the crowd closed in and several students walked up close to my face and would just scream at me and the crowd.
Soon, I walked out of the crowd and jumped on a ledge. I faced the crowd of 80-120 and continued preaching while others stood on either side of me and screamed. I straddled my water jug while I stood and preached but somehow some students removed the cap of my water jug and stuck a cigarette in it.
After about 30 minutes, a black police officer approached me and told me I had to step down from the ledge because the ledge was school property. After being told I could not be on the ledge because it was “school property?” I repeatedly asked the officers if this was a public university. I could tell they were not concerned about the school policy or safety but rather appeasing the anti- Christ liberal student body and authorities on the campus.
I inquired of the black police officer why last week, Brother Ross was allowed to stand on the ledge. After some time him and his partner, a frail white guy who sounded very effeminate told me “if you stand on the wall again you will be arrested!”
You could tell these officers take their job seriously. They watch the students steal my water jug and stick cigarette in it and say nothing. They watch a mob of students crowd me and stand in my face and scream while I am trying to exercise first amendment rights and do nothing. They watch me repeatedly threatened with students in close quarters and say nothing. They watch students flash me and say nothing. As long as the preacher who is trying to exercise first amendment rights and keep things safe by standing on the wall does not get on that wall.
Once the police saw I stepped down from the wall and was going to persist in trying to preach with people constantly surrounding me and being in my face they left.
I continued to answer questions and preach as best to the hostile crowd. Of course, it is hard to have a big crowd with everyone in your face so the crowd was only around 25-30. I did manage to have some good questions and good interaction with some towards the end of the day.
I stopped preaching around 2:45 PM. Soon after this we left the campus.
That evening we met up with Brother Ross who had spent the day preaching at George Mason University. I preached in a church for one hour from Matthew 6:10 on “Advancing the Kingdom”.
