www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/life_of_ryan/series.jhtmlAfter a day of preaching at Weber State University we were standing in the lobby of the student union and my friend Jordan was standing on a skateboard when these five teenagers walked out of the elevator... Jordan said, "Hey! Can you show me how to ollie?" So then six guys are trying to ollie in the lobby of the union and then I walk downstairs and see this sight and decided to try to kickflip. I used to skateboard a lot when I was younger and actually bought a skateboard to bring with me this year on the road. After, we walked outside and continued talking... One of the young guys who was 18 was named Ryan Sheckler. Him and 4 of his friends were skateboarding. I had no idea who he was, he said he was a pro skateboarder with his own TV show. He asked me if I had ever heard of him or his show. To be honest I really didn't believe him but then he showed me his own brand of board, shoe, tee shirts... I looked him up when I got home and sure enough, it is the same guy. It turns out that he is one of the best young skateboarders around. For a kid who has probably millions of dollars, he had to bum a dollar off my friend Jordan to buy a coke. I tried to give him a big money tract but he declined. He and his friends heard the whole gospel though. Blessings, Miles

That's awesome!
My kids and I got to talk to Tony Hawk and Kevin Staab in Wilmington over the summer. They were there to attend a funeral of a friend of theirs, so I didn't get to speak with them long.
I took up skateboarding again with my kids, even have a couple half pipes in our backyard now. We started a skate ministry at our church which was going well until some local kids tore up some stuff around and we took the ramps down. We are still going to try to keep the ministry going, but will have to get some portable ramps that we can lock up or find an indoor spot.
Next time you are in NC, you will have stick around a few days so we can skate, jam on the mandolin and preach. That's a wild combination!

Yeah, that would be cool. I have been to a couple skate parks since going on the road... One in Utah and I just went to one today as the campus was pretty dead in Indianapolis. It has been fun skateboarding again.
Blessings,
Miles

Joe, you are some kind of nuts! Great pics of you and the boys. I didn't know you played the mandolin, I tried to pick it up a couple of times, I just can't get it. Not enough talent, I suppose.

Joe, you are some kind of nuts! Great pics of you and the boys. I didn't know you played the mandolin, I tried to pick it up a couple of times, I just can't get it. Not enough talent, I suppose. I am not very good on the mandolin. I can pick out tunes by ear playing one string at a time, but that is about it. Miles tried giving me some lessons but I think he just resolved to pray for divine intervention to make up for my lack of talent ;D The skateboard on the other hand has been great exercise and a fun way to spend time with my kids. It has also helped me reach some people I would not have been able to reach otherwise. Next time your in town John, I am strapping some pads and a helmet on you and sending you down the ramp in the backyard! During all that time in Hawaii you must have learned to surf and skate at some point!
