Our original plans to travel to Oklahoma this week changed, and as we are parked at a friend’s home in Flagstaff, we endeavored to preach for at least a couple of days this week. We were not able to preach again at NAU, so the Lord allowed us to travel down to Phoenix for two days to preach at ASU.
We left Flagstaff at about 8:30AM and arrived on campus at around 12:15PM. As we approached the free speech area, we realized that a voter’s registration campaign was in full swing, complete with huge speakers and rap/club music blaring.
These campuses allow for the noon lunch hour to be a sort of entertainment or time space for amplified sound, so we waited until 1:00PM to start the preaching. I started off explaining where the focus of most students’ attention is. It is not on the Bible, or Jesus Christ, or eternity. It is straddled on the here and now, with vague inferences towards the future, but only because the economy or the war on terror may jeopardize the students’ party animal lifestyle. Very sad indeed.
The resident atheists were so excited that we were back this semester. They quickly attacked me with the same tired questions. I announced that everything was created by God, including the laws of physics, and even mathematics. These things did not evolve over time, but have been since creation. The atheists were not happy that I already had them stumped, so they resorted to name calling and other juvenile tactics. They did serve the purpose of drawing in a crowd, though, and after about 15 minutes, 100 or so students gathered around us in a large circle.
An angry muslim student tried to attack me because I told the crowd the truth about islam, but he soon calmed down after he realized I would not back off. I was able to preach the gospel clearly and effectively for a little more than an hour, and answered most of the students’ questions. Our atheist fan club would stick with us all day, as they promised. I turned the somewhat slightly rowdy crowd to Evangelista, and she calmly began to preach from John 3.
Of course, the same tired arguments surfaced; don’t judge, preach love not hate, god loves everyone, etc., etc., ad nauseum. Evangelista calmly taught from the scriptures concerning repentance, public preaching, and all of the excuses the sinners threw at her, she patiently refuted. The crowd fluctuated between 50-125 during the hour or so that she preached.
I personally am amazed at the hypocritical double-standard some of these students live by. Then again, they are the fruit of a very wicked and evil generation. That and most students have bought into the false “pray a prayer and you are saved forever but that’s not all you also get to sin all you want and jesus still forgives you but wait there’s more you also get the blessings of a lifetime a big fat bank account and everything you’ve ever dreamed of as long as you give your 10% and yes if you act right now you even get the hottest boyfriend or girlfriend on campus and sex all you want even if you are a homo god loves you he would never send you to hell” gospel. Ugh! Oh, how God must weep at this. I am even more amazed at His longsuffering towards mankind. The only hope for this generation is Jesus Christ.
The lovey-dovey christians were also on hand, some openly weeping, others screaming at the top of their lungs to try and drown out the preaching. One young lady sang out loud over and over and over and over again “jesus loves you, jesus loves you.” I calmly asked her, “don’t you know any other songs?” A very loud and vile homosexual male also threatened to break my camera, cussed at Evangelista and I, switching back and forth, smoking his cigarette, simulating perverted sex acts, and all the while he professed to be a christian. Sick, sick, sick!
As I was filming this wicked tirade, a campus employee approached me, encouraging me and thanking me for coming to the campus to preach. One of our fiercest hecklers stood and listened as the gentleman applauded our efforts and took one of my contact cards. The heckler was speechless, at least for a few minutes anyway.
I did see one of the professing christians, a young man, working the crowd. He had introduced himself while I was waiting for the music to end earlier in the day. He actually was refuting some of the evolution lies with a small group of 15 or so, and the students started repeating the same questions over and over. He was like, “man, I just went through 30 minutes of explaining that.” I kind of felt sorry for him, but admired his efforts. The group eventually turned on him.
As I closed out the final hour of the afternoon, the crowd grew to about 150. I stepped over to a wall/planter and stood above the students to avoid being crowded. They shouted question after question, argument after argument, but I stood my ground and preached the Bible. I sometimes grow weary of the students who say “preach love, not hate!” So, I reference John the Baptist, Jesus himself, Peter, and Paul. They all preached repentance. Where do we see the gospel being preached in the Bible? The book of Acts is the template for the early church, but love appears zero times. That’s right, zero! I also noticed that the angry homosexual from earlier was subdued and looking very convicted as I preached hellfire and judgment for the sinners.
I ended at about 4:00PM with a final warning to the large crowd, “Go and sin no more!” It was an electrifying day of preaching and interaction with the students. A few of them followed us back towards our vehicle, and I answered some questions and gave our contact information to a student working on a class project. Praise God for the opportunity to preach the gospel here again!

Today we arrived a little before 11AM, and found out that a band would be performing during the noon hour. I hoisted my banner and immediately drew in a small crowd that grew to about 100 very quickly, thanks to a hired heckler from the resident atheists. I preached and answered questions for an hour before the music started, specifically addressing false gospel teachings that are so prevalent today.
This campus had yet to be preached for the Fall semester, so the crowds were large, and the interaction was good. The vulgar homosexual from yesterday showed up again, but remained mysteriously silent. I know that he was convicted from yesterday, because he had a very somber look, and was not the least bit arrogant like yesterday. Praise God!
A young female student who professed to be a christian was quick to correct my preaching, but I challenged her with a few scriptures, and her attitude seemed to lose its edge. These kids come to us during the preaching with so much zeal and virility, it is sometimes hard for them to stop and actually listen. I have experienced some breakthroughs when I patiently explain our position from the Bible.
This was not the case this time, as nothing seemed able to penetrate the “wall of love” around her brain. It is so sad, as these kids even break down and weep, and defend their positions tooth and nail, but never consider God’s just and holy character, his righteous and perfect standard of judgment. They may have excuses today, but not on Judgment Day!
Evangelista and I resumed preaching aloud at 1:00PM, and took turns throughout the afternoon. We did meet a mother and son team handing out flyers for their church, and Mom seemed perturbed that none of the students were heeding her warnings concerning fornication. I assured her that the Bible, Evangelista, and I agreed with her, and we exchanged information with them. The young man was quick to exclaim his desire to have the boldness that we had. I explained that if you are full of the Holy Spirit, this type of ministry would be a normal occurrence, and the desire to witness for Jesus would burn in one’s belly until released and fulfilled.
We were able to maintain crowds of 75-150 until about 3:30, when we bid the atheists farewell, and headed back to Flagstaff. Overall, it was a very productive two days of preaching, and we look forward to preaching here again in the future.
PLEASE PRAY FOR US AS WE PREACH THE GOSPEL PUBLICLY ON CAMPUSES AND STREETCORNERS EVERYWHERE!
