Sunday January 18, 2009: Attended local church services at our home church. I had the privilege of preaching in the evening service for one hour from Matthew 9:1-8 and Luke 8:1 on “A Gospel of Power”.
Monday January 19, 2009: Schools were out today due to MKL holiday. We spent the day getting ready to leave and driving to new location to preach at University of Central Florida.
SUNNY TROPICAL FLORIDA
Tuesday January 20, 2009: At 10:30 AM temperature outside was 46 degrees and the wind was blowing at 18 mph even though the sky was clear and sunny. I decided not to make the over one hour drive to Orlando to preach on campus due to such unusually cold weather. In Sunny Tropical Florida it is difficult to get a crowd on days when the weather is very cold.
In the evening I preached in the local church where we were staying for over 1 hour from Matthew 9:1-8 and Luke 8:1 on “A Gospel of Power”. We had a very good altar service and the message seemed to be a great challenge to this missionary minded church.
Wednesday January 21, 2009-University of Central Florida-Orlando, Florida: At 10:30 AM temperature was only 35 degrees but the wind was not blowing nearly as hard as yesterday and it was again clear and sunny.
I really wanted to get on campus and preach but I was cautious about making the long drive out when it may be too cold for students to stand around. After much wrestling to stay or go, we went.
We took our time arriving on the campus. I reasoned the later we started the warmer the weather would be. Just before noon the temperature was around 42 degrees.
I began preaching around 1:00 PM. I decided to wear my sandwich board sign today since it may be harder to get the attention of the students due to the cold weather.
MEETING BIBLE GREG
After preaching a few minutes I saw a man walking up to me with what appeared to be a preaching banner. I asked him what his banner said and he showed me and told me it said, “ASK ME WHY YOU DESERVE HELL”.
I introduced myself and he introduced himself as Greg Davis or “Bible Greg”. I asked him if he wanted to start preaching but he told me to go ahead. I believe he is a Fundamentalist Baptist.
A GENUINE BELIEVER?
Two students walked up and he began talking to them. Although these two students seemed insincere to me he was very patient with them and continued talking to them and reasoning. During this time a female student approached me and seemed to have been an earnest new Christian.
The class break began and students were out walking everywhere. Bible Greg was still talking to the two students and I kept waiting for him to start preaching but he did not.
I decided to move down from him about 25 yards and started preaching. Soon I gathered a handful of listeners and gradually the crowd grew to about 30.
For the next few hours I had a great day of preaching to crowds ranging from 30-70. The crowds were the typical lively, playful but somewhat civil and open UCF type crowds. It seems many of the students from the past two years have graduated and there are many new students now but the general attitude of the campus is the same.
SAVED AND SINNING?
I continued preaching until 3:30 PM and then stepped on the sidewalk to leave. Several students who were professing Christians who claimed they sinned everyday and cannot live free from sin wanted to talk to me. They told me while I was preaching they were going to pray for me but I told them God would not hear their prayers since they are sinners and they regard iniquity in their heart (John 9:31, Psalm 66:18).
They asked me questions on the sidewalk as they and other students surrounded me. I answered them patiently and thoroughly with scriptures but in the middle of my answer they told me they were leaving and would pray for me.
I continued answering questions from the students until around 4:00 PM and then began to head to the library. A humble, sincere African American male student wanted to talk to me about the subject of holiness and living sin free so he followed me into the library and I continued answering all his questions thoroughly with the scriptures. He then received a phone call and informed me his Bible study group was coming to meet him in the library.
INFILTRATING THE BIBLE STUDY
It seemed when they saw me they were hesitant about sitting and talking with me but then they invited me to their Bible study. There were about 10 of us in all and all males. They were representing the Baptist Campus Ministry and several were 5 Point Calvinists including the leader of the study.
We ended up having a very good discussion. I was able to clarify to them much of what I believed on certain doctrines verses what others told them I believed or what they assumed I believed. I was also able to explain to them in a way they seemed to receive well how certain points of Calvinism were inconsistent. I left the Bible study around 5:30 PM.
Thursday January 22, 2009-University of Central Florida-Orlando, Florida: It was another clear, sunny and cool day but not as cool as the day before. I began preaching at noon and for some time there were very few students walking around and all seemed to ignore me. I noticed one young man who fiercely opposed me the day before while claiming to be a Christian yet cursing like a gangster rapper with his camera equipment on hand to film me.
GOOD TIME OF PREACHING AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS
I continued preaching to the birds, squirrels and an occasional passerby until soon a few students began standing to listen. Soon a small group of listeners gathered and continued to grow to around 125-150. For some time it was a very good time of preaching and answering questions as the students were attentive, lively, and asked good questions. Good numbers of the listeners were sitting down.
HYPOCRITE PREACHER TRIES TO STEAL THE CROWD
As the crowd continued to grow larger several students continued to angrily get in my face and make threats. Some of the professing Christian hypocrites could no longer stand multitudes hearing the message of “repent or perish” (Luke 13:3), live holy or go to hell (Hebrews 12:14) and began to stand in front of me and try to steal the crowd by preaching a message of “greasy grace and sloppy agape”.
This caused the crowd that was before attentive, asking good questions and keeping their distance to crowd in around me and the atmosphere became much more chaotic.
DIVIDING THE CROWD
I told the “hypocrite preacher” and everyone who wanted to listen to him to go to the other side of the green. They heeded my command and the “hypocrite preacher” and about 30-40 students followed him to an area about 20 yards behind me.
By now the crowd had moved in all around me and was firing all kinds of questions, accusations, insults, threats, etc. all at the same time. With all the chaos and the division of the previous crowd, my crowd was now down to around 50-60.
Eventually many of the hecklers left and I was able to have some more quality time of questions and answers. Several of the students asked very good questions and listened intently as the crowd thinned down to around 25-40. One African American male especially asked good sincere questions for some time and listened intently. After I stopped preaching he came up to shake my hand and thank me for helping him to understand what the Bible taught about sin free holiness living.
I continued preaching until 3:45 PM. At the end of the day a very polite student introduced himself and told me he wanted to interview me some time for a project he was doing.
Friday January 23, 2009-University of Central Florida-Orlando, Florida: Today was an even warmer day than the day before with temperatures reaching into the high 60’s. Sister Elizabeth and I arrived on campus a little later than we wanted to.
I noticed both the student from the day before who was filming and had opposed me so much on Wednesday was ready with his film equipment and also the polite young man who asked to do the project had his equipment. He came and greeted me and we talked a few minutes about what he wanted to do in his project.
Sister Elizabeth began preaching around 12:25 PM and did not gather any listeners. She only preached for about 10 minutes and then asked me if I wanted to preach. I said yes, but needed to go to the restroom first.
A few minutes later when I came back (around 12:45) she had a few male students screaming at her to get off the campus etc. This caused a few others to stop and listen. I walked up and began addressing the comments the students were making. From there the crowd quickly grew to around 30-40.
WHERE DOES THE BIBLE SAY GOD HATES?
For the remainder of the afternoon I preached to crowds of 30-110. One student angrily knocked my Bible out of my hands after asking me to show him where in the Bible it said God ever hates, tearing some of the pages and then shoved me.
At times the crowds were somewhat rowdy but overall it was a very good day of preaching, teaching, and answering questions. I thought I would stop preaching around 2:30 PM but suddenly the crowd around me grew quickly to about 60-75 and were listening attentively and asking good questions.
By 3:15 PM the crowd was around 30-40 and was angry and unsettled. Sister Elizabeth preached for about 15 minutes as I sat in a chair behind her.
From 3:30 PM until 4:20 PM I sat in the chair and answered questions from the group of about 30-40 students surrounding me. Some were good and sincere and others were accusatory towards God and me and insincere.
