James 5:19-20-Brethren if any of you do err from the truth and one convert him let him know that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death and shall hide a multitude of sins.
1) Who is he writing to? Brethren. The church. Christians. Brothers.
2) If any of you do err from the truth. To err means to depart from or turn away from (Hebrews 3:12, 1 Timothy 4:1). You cannot depart or turn away from something you were never a part of.
Can you fall out of a tree if you were never in a tree? Can you turn away from something you never turned to?
If the author is warning the Christians not to turn away from the truth then it is possible for us to turn away from or depart from the truth. Who is the truth? Jesus (John 14:6).
Who is God? Jesus (John 1:14, Matthew 1:23).
Can you depart from God and remain saved? Can you be saved apart from Jesus?
Hebrews 3:12-Take heed BRETHREN lest there be in ANY OF YOU AN EVIL HEART OF UNBELIEF IN DEPARTING FROM THE LIVING GOD.
Why would we be warned against departing from God if it was impossible to do so?
1 Timothy 4:1-Now the Spirit speaketh expressly that in the latter times some shall DEPART FROM THE FAITH.
The author says we can depart from the faith. We are saved by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are saved by Jesus (God). The author says we can depart from God.
Do you really believe you can be saved apart from Jesus Christ?
3) "And one convert him" Now the brother who has departed from, turned from, fallen away from the truth needs to be converted again.
Many ask things like "Can you get born again again?" According to James if you depart from the truth you must be converted back to the truth.
4) "Let him know that he which converts the sinner" Now the brother who has departed from the truth (Jesus Christ) and must be converted again is now referred to as a sinner.
Christians are not ever referred to as sinners.
1 Peter 4:18-If the RIGHTEOUS scarcely be saved where shall the ungodly and the SINNER APPEAR.
Notice Peter makes a distinction between the righteous man and the sinner.
John 9:31-Now we know that God heareth not sinners-God does not answer the prayers of sinners.
1 Peter 3:12-The eyes of the Lord are over the righteous and his ears are open unto their prayers.
God only hears the prayers of the righteous. He does not hear the prayers of sinners.
He makes a distinction between the righteous man and the sinner (1 Peter 4:18).
1 Timothy 1:8-9-For we know that the law is good if a man use it lawfully knowing this that the law is not made for a RIGHTEOUS MAN but for the LAWLESS AND DISOBEDIENT, FOR THE UNGODLY AND FOR SINNERS, FOR THE UNHOLY AND PROFANE...
In 1 Timothy 1:15 where Paul calls himself the chief of sinners it is in reference to his pre conversion because he finishes his statement by saying "HOWBEIT FOR THIS CAUSE I OBTAINED MERCY".
Paul never wrote to the sinners at the churches but always to the saints at each church he wrote an epistle to.
Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians 2:10-Ye are witnesses and God also how holily, justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe.
Paul is saying God was his witness that his lifestyle, behavior, actions, etc. before God was holy, just and unblameable.
You cannot have actions before God that are holy, just and unblameable while you are sinning against Him every day in word, thought and deed.
5) "shall save a soul from death" The brother who has departed from Jesus who is the truth and now needs to be converted again and is now referred to as a sinner instead of a righteous man will receive eternal ****ation if he does not turn back to the truth (Jesus) and become converted back to the holy way of living.
Romans 6:23-The wages of sin is DEATH but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Death means eternal ****ation, eternal separation from a Holy God. "Let him know that he which converts the sinner from the error of his way shall save a SOUL FROM DEATH".
Taking any and all challengers to explain how you believe "Once saved always saved" in the light of James 5:19-20.
