Understanding Romans 7 by Romans 6:16-23.
Romans 6:16 is a summation of Romans 1:18-3:20.
Romans 6:17 is about Romans 3:21 through the end of ch 4. Note: "but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. " That form of doctrine is faith. Faith is the subject of those chapters and faith is that form of doctrine which saves.
Romans 6:18 is about Romans 5. Being made free from sin is what chapter 5 is about. We are made free from sin, because we have been justified as 5:1 makes clear. We have also been made free from sin because we are no longer in Adam, but Christ. Being taken out of Adam and placed in Christ justifies us. Just as a man is the covering of a wife, Christ is now our covering rather than Adam. More on this latter.
Romans 6:19 is about chapter 6-7:6. Romans 6 is about walking in righteousness, so it is the last part of v:19 that is to be noted.
Romans 6:20 and 21 is about chapter 7:7-25.
Romans 6:22 and 23 is about chapter 8.
notice also Romans 6:19 is present tense
Romans 6:20-21 is past tense
Romans 6:22-23 is present tense.
Understanding Romans 7 by Romans 7:1-6.
I could start splitting hairs here, but it may get to involved. I don't want to bog you down too much, so I'll just skim over this one. You'll still see my point on Romans 7 and for now that is the topic.
I'll get to Romans 7:1, 2, and 3 later. you really have to be in it and studied up before tackling those, but they do go with Romans 1:18 through chapter 5.
Romans 7:4 is about Romans 6. Present tense.
Romans 7:5 is about Romans 7. Past tense.
Romans 7:6 is about Romans 8. Present tense.
Some commentaries think the first husband is the law. The first husband is NOT the law, but rather it is Adam in chapter 5, the old man crucified, body, and members in chapters6 and 8. Besides the obvious that Christ is now our covering, it only makes sense that it was Adam and our flesh that was our covering before we were saved. But I can see how one would see the first husband would be the law, if they're not paying attention to what is said.
Understanding Romans 7 from Ephesians chapter 2.
Romans 7 is seen by most as a saved man, probably because of it being so far removed from the depravity of man mentioned in Romans 1:18-3:20. But here in Ephesians we see the same train of thought as the first 8 chapters of Romans. As you will see Paul looks back (remembers Eph 11 and 12) and as Romans 7 is so far removed from Romans 1:18-3:20, so is Paul's "remember" is removed from the depravity of man in Eph 2:1-3. Just as the gospel message separates the lost man from the remembering of times past in Eph, so it does in Romans.
There are a few other reasons Romans 7 is seen by some as a saved man, but I'll address those another day.
Ephesians 2:1-3 is the depravity of man. This can be compared to Romans 1:18-3:20.
Ephesians 2:4-10 is the gospel message. This can be compared to Romans 3:21-7:6.
Ephesians 2:11 and 12 is remembering or a look back at our lost condition. This can be compared to Romans 7:7-25.
Ephesians 2:13-22 is a continuation of the gospel message and the promises of God. This can be compared to Romans 8 and I would venture to say Romans 8-16.
Again we need to notice the tenses. Eph 2:4-10 is in the present tense.
I have posted this on other chat sites and thought I would get some opinions here as well. I know Jed Smock has something on 7:5 and 6 in his book, but I thought I would give my take on Romans 7.
