"Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them" Jer 5:14
Just made it to a computer. Have never been more persuaded about the direness of this situation of the course of the world: so many people in the "Bible belt" are totally lost! Actually I just went to a lecture about a Holocaust survivor but it turned out to be a platform for "diversity/tolerance" stuff. Guys and girls, whenever you hear those words, ALWAYS look for someone to subtlely blaspheme the Bible. Their diversity is a one way street, because they have no tolerance for Biblical Christianity. I heard a bunch of liberal anti Bible rhetoric: there's not enough tolerance for gays; there's not enough tolerance for other religions, etc etc. And several people gave this idea that Christian writings since the 2nd century hate Jews, even this foolishness that the Gospel of John is antisemitic! My blood is still boiling right now thinking about it. I really wanted to make a bunch of statements... fortunately a few people did stick up for Christians. I asked a question but didn't really get the opportunity to comment. Pray for me that I might wax bolder and bolder, and yet still express compassion. I don't want Muslims or gays to go to hell. (The average lifespan of an American gay is 45 years old! I don't want him to die young- miserable and in his sin.)
And John 14:6 is not going to fall out of the Bible just cause people don't like it!
Anyway, we went out this past Saturday, four of us, downtown. First we stopped at the bus station. The bus station has a no solicitation policy and there was a security guard outside. We reasoned that we should preach. That way everybody would hear, and if they kicked us out for passing out tracts afterwards, they at least had already heard. Gave a 2 min message on Luke 13:1-5, saying the people of New Orleans were not worse sinners than any other city, but except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish. There were several people outside on the benches, and they seemed to listen. Afterwards, I passed out a few tracts and met some people who lost everything they had in New Orleans. Told them how sorry I was. They even said themselves that God is beginning to judge America! I was really at a loss for words though.... what do you tell someone in that case! The security guard talked to us, she was saved... Praise God!
Then walked down the street to a bar. There were only two people standing outside, so we decided to just do one on one. One man was very blasphemous, claiming the Bible was man made blah blah blah, and that God wrote his word on our souls... not in a book. He believed all religions get to the same place. But he was so hostile! My friend took him through a few of the commandments and of course he was unbelievably self righteous. He would not admit that he was a thief or a liar.
Him: I wouldn't call someone a liar
Me: Sir, if I committed one murder, I would be a murderer.
Him: I wouldn't call you that
Me: What in the world would you call me then
Him: Someone who occasionally murders.
He then pointed his finger in our faces and said "You have no right to judge me! Only God can judge me!" At this point he became increasingly angry and violent. I knew we had walked into a trap, because of his blasphemy. I knew the enemy had sent him to discourage us to go home. (I remembered later this piece of witnessing advice: When they say
"You can't judge me", respond "Sir that right there is a judgment". This guy was so furious that I couldn't even give him a Biblical explantation of proper judgment, ie John7:24-Judge ye righteous judgement, I Cor 5, etc. I said sternly then as he continued, "This man will not listen. Let's go" He tried to continue talking to one of the group, so I spied a bench and ran to it and began preaching. The MOMENT I said "The Bible says", he vanished into the bar. Folks, there is POWER in the WORD OF GOD!
We then walked down the street to the other bar and began giving the word. People came increasingly til midnight to stand in line at this club. When we first got there, everyone was having a good old time. But the more we preached, the more their mouths were stopped. Three of us tagged on and off. I must have preached 95% Law. It was intense. Guys would ride by in their box chevys with the spinners over and over! I understand two or three times to show off your ride, but the same guys could have found a parking place yet they chose to keep riding by, hearing the Word every time! One guy rode by at least six times! (The only traffic at that time of night is people looking for clubs and bars).
Eventually the security guards came out. I kept on preaching, and the other three talked to them. I couldn't hear the conversation over the music of the club and the cars riding by. All I know is that they eventually walked over to me, left and told me good job! Found out later one security guard said he is very convicted to work at a place like that, but needs to support his family. They reasoned with him that God would provide for him if he would take a step of faith. Pray for this man and for these clubs. I know God answers every prayer acc. to his will. And I have heard several reports of people praying bars and clubs out of business. Hallelujah!!!!
We continued to reason with them to turn from their wicked ways, and get right with God. I really hoped desperately that several of them would lose heart and go home. In fact that is exactly what I told them: "The club is a wicked place. You don't need to be out here tonight. Go home and get on your knees and repent. Mean what you say: pour out your beer on the ground and go home". At about midnight it became difficult to preach over the pulsating music from the cars. We think that we should get a megaphone or maybe one of those paper cones those cheerleaders use. That way we couldn't be bothered about noise ordinances. Does anybody know where in the world you get one of those things?
We passed out a few tracts afterward. I know that Micah on my last post said we should pass out a lot afterwards. I don't know why we didn't. We had prayed before that God would make the people wood and his words fire, and HE DID.
My voice was shot after the night. I was already getting sick before we went out. I read from some street preacher that singing afterwards heals the voice.... does anybody remember that quote?
It was so awesome though. It is such a blessing to be in the LORD's work. I know that God has made us "for such a time as this", and if we will respond to him "deliverance will arise from another place". Esther 4
Many sinners are here displaced from New Orleans. I strongly desire to preach at the college campuses, but have not done so as of yet. Many from Tulane (N. Orleans) have come up here and I long to be able to hold forth the Word of Life to them, as they are a very wicked campus. Please pray for me, esp for my mind that I would mediatate on the Word and not on the vile things of the world. My flesh I feel is my own worst enemy.
Consider this quote from Mr. Wesley:
" About seven I preached at the Gins, and the people flocked together from all quarters. The want of field preaching has been one cause of deadness here. I do not find any great increase of the work of God without it. If ever this is laid aside, I expect the whole work will gradually die away." June 24th 1764
No wonder there is so little increase of the work of God. There is so little field preaching!
We must continue labouring for the kingdom! Keep knocking on doors, keep handing out tracts, keep it up! Please continue to write reports, for they are very encouraging to read.
