This is a serious question for you all.
Sisters please do not get offended.
Should women open air preach?
I'm personally sitting on the fence at the present moment and would really value your thought's on this.
As you know Independent Baptists do not believe that women should teach/preach from the pulpit to a mixed audience in church (OK if to women and children). I agree that this is supported by Scripture, but what about O/A?
I have spoken to two pastors elect and one thought it was O.K. and the other said he couldn't say that Scripture forbids it but for practical reasons it probably would not be wise for a lady to O/A.
For example, messengermicah if your wife was to be attacked by a rowdy sinner you would obviously intercede and defend her and rightly so, but the resulting altercation would adversely affect your Christian witness.
I don't know. Maybe it depends on the crowd. If for example it is a crowd of tourists then ladies go for it, but if a crowd of drunk party goer's maybe you should leave it to the men, unless you surround yourself by some muscle packing men. Obviously Jesse wouldn't fit the bill. When you get married mate you have to get your helpmeet to fatten you up. Maybe like Bro Israel and Smock ;D

Independant Baptists would be liars if they said the word "prophecy" did NOT mean "preach".
ALL Indepentant Baptists and Fundamentalists that i have EVER face to face spoken with agree that the word "prophesy" means "to preach".
Obstacle for Fundies and Baptists:
Philips 4 daughters, post Pentecost, prophesied".
Paul said that if a woman PRAYS or PROPHESIES *preaches* with her head UNcovered (without the green light from her husband) she DISHONORS her head.
Scripture, in the Fundamentalist vein, allows women to preach.

PS: DocH... I do agree that there are some women (as well as men) who do more of a harm preaching than good.... especially bitter women

All I can say is that it's tough being a woman! ;D 1)Obey God or my husband? 2)Public school or homeschool 3)work or stay home 4)What to wear 5)speak or not to speak 6)preach or not to preach 7)make-up or no make-up 8)long hair or short And than you ask your husband what do you think? I dunno...

Thanks Dan for that response. Problem though is what if your husband were to ask you to do something not morally right for instance am I exempt from being punished from that? Christian school is expensive for our family of seven. It's hard to take care of the home and everything else when you have a family of seven and work at the same time, so I have to wonder if I should be working sometimes.

I agree. But who did they prophesy to? Church or outdoors? I don't know.
If you carry on reading when God wanted to speak to Paul, He called a MALE prophet from another place (Acts 21:10-11).
Paul said that if a woman PRAYS or PROPHESIES *preaches* with her head UNcovered (without the green light from her husband) she DISHONORS her head.
Scripture, in the Fundamentalist vein, allows women to preach.
Does the Scripture say that they prayed and prophesied in the presence of men?
Paul also said: "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law" (1Cor14:34).
How do you interpret 1 Tim 2:12?
I think Scripture, in the Fundamentalist vein, does indeed allow women to preach open air but NOT in the Church to a mixed male and female audience of believers.
Practically should a women O/A is another matter.
Can anyone think of any women O/A preachers during the great awakenings and Welsh revivals etc.
The only one that comes to mind is Catherine Booth.

Doc H,
A lot of times women seem to be better than drawing a crowd than men. I don't know why this is, maybe the crowd thinks they can bully a woman around more, or maybe it is more of a novelty.
Yes, my wife has preached with me in some very rough places. Key West Fantasy Fest, Homosexual parade, South Beach Urban Beach Week, etc. Always preaching to drunk, rowdy sinners. The thought often crosses my mind "What if my wife is attacked?"
This can be part of cross bearing.
These thoughts occur more when we are not preaching than during the heat of the battle.
I do not force or drag my wife to preach. She goes very willingly. Sometimes I wish she would not, but we trust the Lord.
We count the cost before we go. If my wife was attacked during preaching, I think I would try to shield her, but not attack back unless absolutely necessary. Even then I wonder. It is one thing to be attacked for some other reason, but when attacked for the Word of God, I think we should just take the blows, flee the scene if possible, or shield the person being attacked like they did in the civil rights movement.
I agree with biblethumper on Acts 21 and Phillip's daughters.

messengermicah,
I have no problem with sister micah O/A preaching.
I certainly would not be game to attack her with a robust ,tool-belt wearing fellow like yourself standing in attendance. ;D
I agree with biblethumper on Acts 21 and Phillip's daughters.
You may agree with biblethumper but what saith the Scripture? That's the point.
Correct me if I am wrong but the old time Fundamental Pentecostals did not allow women to preach in the church.
Why the change?

Doc H,
I used to be a powerlifting champion back in the late 80's and early 90's but am not nearly as strong as I used to be. I am definitely stronger than average but I see so many guys that could easily pulverize me.
I understand Acts 21 to say Phillip's daughters preached.
I think the old time pentecostals were usually more liberal than most about women preaching. Maria Woodworth Etter, Aime Semple McPherson, etc. There was an early black woman pentecostal preacher but I do not remember her name at this time.

I am not against women being open air preachers. I cannot see any grounds to prevent them from doing so.
As for the preaching from a pick up truck idea, ask Miles about it. Him, and I did that last July(2005) in LA.

Philip's daughters certainly weren't Open Air Preaching... the context clearly shows a CHURCH meeting, as Agabus came after the daughters; however, DocH, the fact REMAINS that they DID preach, and in the context of the CHURCH.... they certainly weren't preaching the Gospel to the lost in the context of Acts 21.

On the street or in the church or ANYWHERE, doesn't matter. The femmes can preach. Prolly better then most guys could (as I have seen in my experience).

Not good enough, however... they certainly didn;t preach anything that caused you to be converted through the Power of the Holy Ghost; neither did the men. You simply need to repent and forget about partaking in Family discussions. FIRST, become a PART of this Family of God. The first step is to repent and place your faith in Jesus Christ.

Ewww, I'm certainly not gonna repent because YOU told me too.
There was a much different feeling afterwards when most of the female preachers were done preaching then when I heard OA. It might also have had something to do with their attitudes and style (women had, OA guys did NOT).
I restate, women, rpolly better at it.

My wife said to me tonight,"If more men were men, then women wouldn't have to act like them and take on the role of preaching for them."
I think there is merit to that. We need more laborers, more men who are willing to die to themselves and carry their crosses daily. Biblically I like this discussion. Great debate.

Luketentwo Your wife hit the nail right on the head.... If more men would be Godly men....
In response to the question about women OA preaching, the group I sometimes preach with are Independent Baptist and they do not let the women preach... They do let them hold signs though... I do not know their reason from a biblical stand point, but i will find out when I see then again...

Sorry, but I don;t buy it. There aren't enough godly men, so by default women must take up the cause? You REALLY believe that?

Philip's daughters certainly weren't Open Air Preaching... the context clearly shows a CHURCH meeting, as Agabus came after the daughters; however, DocH, the fact REMAINS that they DID preach, and in the context of the CHURCH.... they certainly weren't preaching the Gospel to the lost in the context of Acts 21.
I am not disputing the fact that they preached and that it was in the Church.
But did they preach to a mixed audience or was it only to women and children.
The fact that a male prophet was sent to speak to Paul would suggest to me that they did not preach to men, which would be in line with the other Pauline (pun intended) epistles.
I personally would not attend a service where there was a women 'pastor' although I did when attending a liberal Baptist church many moons ago.
Don't the Brethren separate into male and female groups to allow the women to preach and then come together for the main service where the male pastor preaches?
I may be wrong on this but since I am right on 99.999999% of things it's very unlikely ;D
