The old man is the human spirit endwelt by and enslaved to sin. But God crucified the old man and gave us a new spirit, created "in righteousness and holiness" (Eph. 4:24) Hundreds of years before Christ, Ezekiel prophesied that God would perform this heart transplant under the New Covenant:
"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you..." (36:26-27a)
We were dead in trespasses and sins. But we are no longer. We were sons of disobedience, but we are no longer. We were expressing the desires of our spiritual father, satan. But he is our father no longer. We were children of wrath. But we are no longer.

Amen!
Christ takes those who were dead in sin and makes them dead to sin!
Chris takes those who were free from righteousness and makes them free from sin!
I love how Ephesians 2 uses the word "were" as opposed to "are". We were yet sinners, we were enemies of God, we were children of wrath and of disobedience.
But now Christ has made all things new! Whoever is in Christ is a new creature, old things are past and all things are made new!
