A man wearing suspenders and a hat carrying a sign with the word “Forsake all your sin and follow the Lord Jesus Christ” voiced his beliefs at the University of South Alabama Student Center amphitheater Sept. 30.
There were over 100 students and a police officer present. What could have been just another run-of-the-mill sermon turned into an oral argument when students got involved.
The man named Jess began making accusations to the moral character of the students in attendance. Some of his banter included “women who cut their hair are whores,” “women shouldn’t be in college” and “your skirt is too short, you’re going to hell.”
He then went on to say “most of America is on its way to hell!” The spectators were outraged. Further he said, “Homeland security should worry about God.”
After a while several students began to question Jess. “What about grace?” a student asked. To that the man replied, “God’s grace is conditional.”
He began to quote the Bible. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have everlasting life.” Then he said, “America should take a blood bath.”
There was more yelling, booing and outcries from the students present. At one point the man began yelling, “A lot of the Irish are going to hell” and “When I was in the Philippines I saw a lot of men dressed like women.”
The students did not let Jess’s message go unchallenged. There were several irruptions about “The Golden Girls,” Chuck Norris, “Halo 3” and “Pokémon.”
When asked, “What do you think of all this?” a student Devin replied, “This is ridiculous, he’s misquoting the Bible.”
Another USA student Josh answered, “This is a trite interpretation that is being used to attempt to insight a riot.”
USA student Bryant asked, “If this guy can stand out here and scream, why can’t my band play out here?”
Finally one girl stated, “This is his Constitutional right, but really?”
According to his card, he is a member of the Repent or Burn in Hell Gospel Ministry.
