Wednesday January 6th 2010: North Carolina Central University; Durham, NC
I and two other preachers arrived at the chosen preaching spot just around noon, and it was very cold and slightly windy. This would be my first time preaching at this campus and I was joined by Pat O’Connell and another brother who lives in Durham. Pat started the preach and he and the local preacher alternated at few times. There was some decent foot traffic but not many gathered. I started preaching just before 1:30pm.
The campus police was present the entire time and apparently they did not like us preaching to the hell bound souls on campus. The crowd built up slowly, and soon it would near 50 or so. As soon as the crowd built up an officer addressed me to critique my preaching method. The students were very rowdy and loud, and many blaspheming, and threatening pew warmers were contradicting and cussing. A short stout young man who was walking away, hurried back claiming he was going to hurt me after I sharply rebuked him.
As I preached against homosexuality a young man with a familiar spirit purposely brushed me as he walked past me. Several minutes later he would do it again. I rebuked him and stated my opinion concerning his sexual “hidden” agenda. He got in my face, and was angrily cursing and threatening to knock me out. After kissing me on the side of the face he pushed me and continued approaching me. In my opinion he was very serious. The police barely intervened but did not arrest him. I then went close to the crowd and bulldozed the devilish atmosphere with loud, hard and fast preaching.
I then handed the crowd over to the local preacher and as he preached a campus police officer began speaking through a bull horn stating we were causing a riot and suggested that students leave. The student that assaulted me soon had the officers bull horn and began yelling at us with it for a little while. The police officers became so angry at our preaching they unlawfully demanded that we cross the street while stating we were trespassing. We knew we were on a public sidewalk, and the local preacher eventually ended up getting slammed into a park car and arrested with trumped up charges.
We left the campus at 2:30 and walked to the vehicle reasoning with a young man about our biblical preaching of repentance. Acts 20:21, Mark 1:15, Mark 6:12. Praise the Lord he made bail several hours later and we fellowshipped over dinner.
