-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evangelist Jeff Olver from Open Air Outreach confronts students with radical rhetoric that got strong reactions from students Wednesday outside Gittinger Hall. Preachers bring fire, brimstone Evangelists caused large group of students to listen, argue in front of Gittinger Hall for nearly five hours by Julianna Parker March 08, 2006 As many as 100 students gathered Wednesday afternoon to hear three preachers tell them they are going to hell. But instead of congregating outside Dale Hall, the evangelists delivered their sermons in front of Gittinger Hall. “We wanted to stir things up,” said Jeff Olver, one of the three preachers with the organization Open Air Outreach. Destiny Poole, a University College freshman who listened to the preacher, said the move was effective. “That's how I caught it, because I was just coming from class (in Gittinger) and was like, 'What the heck?'” she said. Olver, who preached in front of Gittinger Hall from about 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., said he came to campus “to convict people about sin" and to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Several students listened to the preachers for hours while others came and went, listening between classes. Carol Brooke, University College freshman, said people probably gathered in greater numbers this time because students argued with the preachers so loudly. The students reacted so strongly because the preachers were successful: They were convicting the students about their sin, Olver said. “If you throw a bunch of rocks into a pack of dogs, the one that yells is the one that got hit,” he said, quoting Leonard Ravenhill, another preacher. Some students said there are good results from the preaching. “It definitely gets people thinking more than they would in class,” said Blaize Jenkinson, psychology sophomore. Much of the preaching concerned sin and the eternal destination of students' souls. Jenkinson said he agreed with much of the preachers' doctrine but thought their method was ineffective. He said he didn't think the preacher had the right to point out people in the crowd and tell them they are going to hell. Olver said most Christians who react to them have a problem with the methods they use. “They say it's harsh and abrasive. We agree,” he said. “Jesus in the Bible was harsh to sin. He never made it seem like sin was OK.” Other students said they didn't think it was right to argue so offensively about religious questions. “Things like this are turning our society against itself,” said Chris Crowe, engineering physics junior. The controversy was also beneficial because it caused people to think about important issues, said Sarah Wade, letters senior. The preachers' organization, Open Air Outreach, sends members to campuses throughout the country. The men are full-time preachers, teaching five to eight hours a day, Olver said. They are unaffiliated with any other preachers who come to campus, he said. Evangelist on Campus - FAST FACTS • spoke near Gittinger Hall for nearly five hours. • Crowds of more than 100 gathered to listen and argue. • He said his goal was to share the gospel and start conversations. Hmmm....is it just me, or does this sound like fairly balanced reporting? A bit easier to read than some of the campus articles about you guys. Keep up the good work!

Is it contreversy, or a stirrig of the Spirit?

You can have a contraversy without the moving of the Spirit, but can you have a moving of the Spirit without contraversy?

"If you throw a bunch of rocks into a pack of dogs, the one that yells is the one that got hit" So, if i preached some radical evolution theory at a christian campus, and you confronted me, it was because i am right? ??

If you'll look carefully at the statement it is saying that the one that "yells" is the one who (usually) the topic or issue (and what is being said about it) has struck a chord with.

Dusty, I am getting the impression that you have far too much time on your hands as this is probably the tenth old thread I have seen that you have brought up. Do you have a job? I think you have answered this already.

miles, i work, and have done so since the age of fourteen. in fact, i worked two long, hard summers as a groundskeeper at green acres retreat center on lake tyler. you have my permission to go to ron skinner if you want any information on me. i have worked through the end of this semester, and am currently taking the summer off because my wife and i are moving back to texas. once in texas, i will be taking over my father's business as my first 'full-time job', basically, my career will be had out in tyler, texas as an independent distributor for mckee foods. they sell little debbie snack cakes.
i will also be building our first house after i purchase some land in lindale this winter.
so, is that ok with you?

i post a lot for now, and i did not mean to snap back either. you have to remember something, miles, i was raised in the south . so, being raised in texas, i was taught that a man must work and support his family. women who work while men do not, as couples, are looked down upon in the worst way. i am married, and i supported my wife as much as possible while she earned her degree to become a registered nurse, and now its my turn. i am going to school, and i will finish in another semester, more than likely, so that my wife will not have to work nearly as much, and we can raise a family, although we will have the means to support ourselves in more ways than one.

Hmmm....is it just me, or does this sound like fairly balanced reporting? A bit easier to read than some of the campus articles about you guys. Keep up the good work! Oh dear, you're confusing "fair and balanced" with fairly one-sided. Careful when you bring those two words near a journalist ... ;D AHEM, you say that it was balanced when really only ONE source was against OAO. The rest are either in support of it, commenting in a fairly neutal manner. While quite a fair number of students were talked to, they were mostly one-liners. Okay, but not any good, longer comments? Also, never is it mentioned the specifics. It really would have been better to say who was reportedly going to hell. Probably wasn't mentioned so not to create drama. Also in your favor. In conclusion, balanced my arse. HA! It's almost a puff piece

Dusty, listen to the audio that is available on the site. Or watch the videos. We do not yell at people. We talk to people.

jesse, people have a different interpretation of yelling. you have a different interpretation, obviously, because your voice is raised and your tone is condescending. i see it, others see...you and your cohort does not, obviously.
