Open Air Outreach, an evangelical Christian ministry group, preached on Thursday and Friday to students outside of the James Branch Cabell library. Presenting themseves as "Christian laymen who utterly refuse to merely go to church rather than be the church," the speakers criticized the Catholic, Hindu and Islamic faiths, as well as the lifestyle choices of gays, women who have abortions and college students who do not attend church.
"Basically, people are just attacking each other," said Jack Dimon, a senior chemistry major. "No one is gaining anything."
Jen Kocka, a junior psychology major, said "the best part" was when one of the speakers said "we're all going to hell for fornication and drinking."
Students displayed mixed reactions to the speakers' proselytizing. One student screamed obscenities from a distance; another stood beside one of the speakers and began to undress himself.
Many students in the crowd watched the age-old debate about religion and philosophy for about 10 or 15 minutes before walking away.
According to the group's Web site, the primary focus of Open Air Outreach is to "share the gospel" on college campuses.
In addition to VCU, Open Air Outreach has traveled this month to Kilgore College, George Mason University and East Carolina University.
